Job Title: Lashing Foreman

Key Responsibilities
Accountabilities:

Safety:
  • Performs tasks in accordance with and enforces terminal safety policies, standards and regulations.
Leadership:
  • Selects and develops staff to optimize the team and exceed operational targets.
  • Functional Excellence:
  • Coordinates and supervises assigned lashing and unlashing processes of containers / cargo.
  • Generates reports on equipment, shift performance and targets areas for improvement within their respective shifts and overall.
  • Coordinates with vessel staff to ensure lashing is compliant and gets sign off and time stamps.
Duties
Safety:
  • Conducts toolbox talks, shift safety audits and safe behaviour observations in accordance with company policy
  • Never ignores unsafe situations, acts and/or behaviours and always intervenes, reports and follows up to correct the situation including disciplinary action
  • Supervises departmental safety processes and systems to ensure all workplace hazards are identified, reported and corrected within agreed timelines.
  • Instructs peers and contractors on standard operating procedures and monitors activities to ensure risk control measures are in place for all tasks carried out at the workplace.
  • Assists in the investigation of assigned incidents at the workplace and ensures all assigned corrective actions are implemented and updated using terminal systems.
Leadership:
  • Performance manages staff to get the most from their talents and proactively replaces low performers.
  • Delegate's responsibility to staff and reviews performance on a quarterly basis at a minimum.
  • Sets and monitors realistic/SMART objectives which are cascaded down from terminal objectives
  • Listens to, counsels and coaches staff and gets commitment from staff to take personal ownership of their career development.
  • Communicates progress with direct reports, provides room for improvement, and deals with low performers firmly, in a timely manner and without bias.
  • Ensures effort is spent on value adding activities through priority management and identification of unnecessary processes

Qualifications and Experience
  • Experience: 1 - 3 years in container terminal operations
  • Education: Completion of Senior Secondary School, University Degree in Management or Maritime studies is preferred.
Work Requirements
  • Position is a shift work pattern with mandatory overtime working days, nights, weekends and holidays.
Licenses:
  • Must have a valid driver's license
Skills
  • Microsoft Office: Basic knowledge of Excel and Word.
  • Basic knowledge of Terminal Operating System: Sparcs
  • Basic understanding of developing, implementing and maintaining accountability of standard operating procedures.
  • Requires a comprehensive understanding of container terminal quay operations including; dangerous goods handling, lashing, slinging and rigging, and heavy lifting equipment capabilities
  • Intermediate English: oral and writing skills. Fluency in Pidgeon, Hausa, Yoruba and/or Igbo working knowledge is beneficial.
