The MRC Unit, The Gambia is undertaking a rotavirus vaccine impact and effectiveness study in children less than 5 years old residing in Upper River and Central River Regions Health and Demographic Surveillance Systems (HDSS). The proposal aims to assess the impact of a rotavirus vaccine introduction on incidence of moderate to severe diarrhoea (MSD). etiology and adverse clinical consequences.

Job Descriptions
  • We are looking for a Research Clinician/Clinical Epidemiologist to be based at MRC Basse in the Upper River Region of The Gambia. The post-holder will provide clinical care to paediatric patients and supervise a team of nursing and field staff based at the sentinel health centres of Central and Upper River Regions of The Gambia
  • S/he will be part a team to coordinate the rotavirus vaccine impact and effectiveness study and also be involved in a range of clinical and research activities.
Essential Requirements
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • M.Sc in Epidemiology (Clinical Epidemiologist only).
  • Commitment to working in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills.
  • A flexible and well-organized approach to work and an ability to meet deadlines,
  • Knowledge of the principles of epidemiological study design, data collection and analysis
  • (Clinical Epidemiologist only).
  • Experience of supervising staff.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Willingness to work outside the normal working hours.
  • Willingness to live in a rural area with limited facilities.
Desirable:
  • Part 2 FWACP.
  • Record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Practical experience of health research in developing countries.
  • The ability to work well in a multi-disciplinary team, including scientists, public sector and Government staff.
  • Excellent IT skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access).
  • The post is up to 2 years in the first instance.
Remuneration
The salary will be paid in Grade 2 and will be dependent on qualifications and experience.
  • The minimum take net salary for a Research Clinician is N61. 118 Dalasis per month equivalent to a net salary of $1, 421 per month.
  • The minimum net salary for a Clinical Epidemiologist is 80, 275 Dalasis equivalent to a net salary of $1, 866 per month.
  • Please note that the salary will be paid in Dalasis and the IJSD figure quoted is given as a guide using the prevailing USD/Dalasl exchange.
  • For displaced staff the package will include displacement allowances for family, flights, contribution to school fees for children and shipment of personal effects.
