Job Purpose

  • We are looking for a Video Journalist with a flair for shooting/packaging impactful stories in various formats like digital skids and character-driven pieces.
  • The post holder will work with the project team based in Abuja and technical partners that may be involved in the production (and post production) of the accountability town hall in various parts of Nigeria.

Role Responsibilities

  • To produce and edit engaging video content for multiple outlets and digital platforms in Hausa.
  • To ensure content is accurate, creative and informative.
  • To reversion video content for different digital platforms.
  • To record and edit video interviews and other types of original content as required.
  • Use analytics to inform video story choices and ensure the content is delivered in the right format(s).
  • To originate and organise ideas for video projects, from filming to processing and publishing.
  • Exercise editorial judgment in developing story ideas and producing accurate and impartial journalism.
  • To undertake pre and post-production and studio work.
  • To liaise closely with other team members and with other departments in the BBC and external vendors to ensure the production of quality content and adherence to best practice.
  • To ensure the best standards of video production are set and adhered to.
  • To prioritise and plan activities taking into account all the relevant issues and factors such as deadlines, staffing and resources available.
  • Willing and adept at passing on skills through training and mentoring.
  • At all times to carry out duties in accordance with the BBC health and safety policy.
  • Willing to travel off base on short reporting trips and assignments and to spend longer periods of time on story deployments if necessary.

Requirements
Are you the right candidate?

  • Ability to gather and prepare high quality audio and video material in Hausa.
  • Extensive experience in shooting and editing in a news environment.
  • Significant recent experience of journalism about Nigeria and global news and current affairs with a good knowledge of production techniques.
  • A full command of written and spoken Hausa as first (or equivalent) language as well as complete comprehension of written and spoken English and the ability to communicate effectively.
  • A good knowledge of BBC editorial guidelines.
  • Strong record of originating and developing stories for news programmes on multiple platforms.
  • Experience of digital newsgathering and filming on location – knowledge of outside broadcast techniques would be an advantage.
  • A clear understanding of the different digital video formats and styles of storytelling for online and social media platforms.
  • Track record of encouraging, guiding and assisting colleagues who are new and unfamiliar with video and digital.
  • A good team player with strong work ethics.
  • Able to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to improving diversity in the BBC and understands how individual differences can benefit the BBC.
  • Effective planning and organising skills, ability to concentrate on several areas of work at one time, delivering consistently to deadlines and reacting positively to changes and conflicting priorities.
  • Ability to write creatively in an engaging manner, adapt, produce and translate with accuracy, clarity and style appropriate to differing audiences and forms of media suitable for multimedia output.
  • The flexibility and adaptability to sustain performance, particularly under pressure to meet deadlines and changing priorities and circumstances.
  • An understanding of health and safety procedures and how they apply to broadcasting.
