ENUGU - Worried by the decline in the number of primary school teachers across the local government areas in the state, Enugu State government has announced its plan to recruit 5,000 teachers to fill existing vacancies.

Commissioner for Education, Professor Uchechukwu Okolo, made the revelation during the flag-off of Local Government Areas, LGA, Education Management Information System, EMIS, rollout in the state, supported by Education Sector Support Programme in Nigeria,ESSPIN.

Okolo said: "The planing of the education sector will not be complete without a credible database. The database we will formulate, will be domiciled in the local government areas to enable us manage education properly.

"This database will afford government an opportunity to know how many teachers are retiring in the sector. As it is now, over 5,000 teacher vacancies exist in the state. If we had an EMIS in place, we would know when to recruit teachers to replace these vacancies.

"The lack of EMIS over the years has not helped government run the education sector well. Now, Enugu state government will recruit teachers to fill the vacancies. What we are battling now is the logistics associated with the recruitment."

"EMIS is a systematic way of getting information to know about retirement and recruitment. Enugu state government is determined to return the schools where it ought to be.

"Above all, it will assist us in the planning, performance, sector diagnosis and needs assessment, administration and management,policies/legislation,monitoring and evaluation, resources mobilization, strengthen partnership and stakeholders participation."
