Overview

  • Gender Based Violence (GBV) is a public health and social development concern with far-reaching consequences for survivors, perpetrators, families, broader society, and economies and primarily affects women and girls, though boys and men also experience it.
  • GBV is driven by structural inequalities and unequal power relations that render women subordinate to men, due to limited access to education, employment, finances, and healthcare and opportunities to contribute to their family, community, and country’s economic growth.
  • Currently, there is growing recognition of the prevalence of various forms of gender-based violence (GBV) According to the Nigerian Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) 2018, 31% of women aged 15-49 years have experienced physical violence at least once and 13.7% of the women surveyed had experienced physical violence within the 12 months preceding the survey.
  • The proportion of women aged 15-49 who reported sexual violence at least once in their lifetime was 9.1%. in Nigeria for instance, 30 per cent of girls and women aged between 15 and 49 reported to have experienced sexual abuse.
  • Also, with 43 per cent of girls married before the age of 18, while 20 per cent of women aged 15 to 49 have undergone Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Once girls in Nigeria are married, only 1.2 per cent of those aged 15 to 19 have their contraception needs met, leading to high levels of early and teenage pregnancy.
  • The Momentum Country Global Leadership (MCGL) project, is a five-year multi-country award funded by USAID to provide more tailored solutions at preventing gender-based violence and expanding access to survivor-centered gender-based violence services nationally and with specific focus on Sokoto and Ebonyi States.

Responsibilities

  • To review the Set Up and Start Phase content of SASA! Together community mobilization approach to prevent violence against women modules leading to the adaptation and development of audience specific IEC materials that addresses the root causes of violence against women and girls using centered artistic pictorials that depict a particular message being promoted through posters, flashcards, flyers, brochures, Flipcharts etc. Graphics and artwork in the content of the adapted sections should reflect the cultural values and sensitivities of local communities
  • Review, adapt, develop illustrations and graphic design of the SASA Together AWARENESS PHASE materials required for use in Local Activism. E.g. Power posters, Community conversations, Deeper Discussions, Community posters, Community info sheets
  • Review, adapt, develop illustrations and graphic design of the SASA Together AWARENESS PHASE materials required for use in Community Leadership Activities. E.g. Leadership leaflet, Community talking points, and Quick chats
  • Engage stakeholders including LPs at the State and Community levels through a 2 days’ workshop to facilitate the adaption and finalization of the SASA! Together AWARENESS PHASE content materials
  • Pre-test the draft adapted and developed materials to determine suitability of illustrations in context; be part of the field work team in Ebonyi and Sokoto states to note down suggested changes from target audience and incorporate/update materials based on field experience
  • Present final illustrations and graphic design as deliverables

Required Qualifications

  • Graphic designer with University Degree in Social Sciences or its equivalent
  • Minimum of five years field experience in SBCC material development, layout, clarity of picture and illustrative context.
  • Experience in qualitative and quantitative research methods, community surveys and good publication track records are desirable
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills are essential
  • Good spoken and written English
  • Ability to speak and write in Hausa or Igbo Languages for translation purpose
  • Excellent report writing skills
  • Familiarity with international donors and social development report writing requirements will be an added advantage

Duration of the Consultancy and Renumeration

  • Number of Work Days: 21 non-consecutive days
  • Amount Payable Per Day: N50,000
