Job Title: Nigeria Energy Correspondent

Req #: JREQ169439
Location: Lagos
Job Type: Hybrid
Category: News & Editorial Careers

Description

  • We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Energy Correspondent to join our team in Nigeria, Africa's biggest oil producer.
  • Based in Lagos, this role offers an enterprising reporter the opportunity to report on a wide range of topics, from how the country's new president grapples with industrial scale crude oil theft and perennial shortages of fuel and power, to moves by oil majors to sell shallow-water projects and shift offshore.
  • Nigeria is an important OPEC producer, but its role has diminished together with its production.
  • The successful candidate will help ensure that Reuters wins the biggest stories impacting the trade flows of the world’s most traded commodity. We need a reporter who can deliver scoops, shed light on the opaque energy market and develop deep sourcing in a secretive industry.
  • As part of a small team, there will also be opportunities to help with other parts of the Nigeria file.

About the Role
As our Energy Correspondent, you will:

  • Bring ideas, energy and enthusiasm.
  • Produce agenda-setting coverage for both our core energy and commodity markets and our media, investor and financial professional audience.
  • Cultivate high-level sources within the government and energy sector.
  • Be fast and ensure Reuters clients get the news first while producing deeply reported, high-impact features.
  • Work closely with the global energy team and colleagues across the file on subjects ranging from OPEC and the oil majors to energy policy, climate change and the transition to cleaner energy sources.

About You
To be our Energy Correspondent, you will likely:

  • Be a self-starter and excellent team player.
  • Have a proven ability to develop sources and break news.
  • Have deep knowledge of Nigeria and its energy sector, including an understanding of the key issues and players, and a knack for explaining them to a global audience.
  • Be comfortable covering breaking news at speed, even as you focus on delivering scoops and longer-form pieces.
  • Have a knack for multimedia storytelling and be willing to produce visuals to accompany your stories when needed.
  • Have at least three years of professional journalism experience, including experience covering energy or commodities.
  • Be fluent in English with the ability to write with speed, clarity and accuracy; proficiency in one of the major Nigerian languages would be a plus.
