Job Title: Senior Legal Officer

Location: Lagos
Employment Type: Full-time
Department / Unit: Company Secretariat / Legal Unit
Reports to: Company Secretary / Legal Adviser
Internal Liaison: All Departments
External Liaison: External Solicitors and Regulatory Institutions

General Description

  • The Senior Legal Officer is responsible for advising on legal matters, commercial contracts and agreements as directed by the Company Secretary/Legal Adviser. They ensure that the company complies with statutory and corporate governance practices and guidelines in the Pension industry.

Key Performance Indicators / Measurement Criteria

  • Draft and/or review legal letters, contracts, agreements, memorandum of understanding, and non-disclosure agreements. Monitor legal obligations under the agreement to ensure compliance.
  • Develop legal precedents in line with legal regulatory and corporate environment.
  • Maintain a database of the status of all court matters pending in court, all claims against the company, and letters related to claims against the company.
  • Attend court cases by or against the company and provide the order of proceedings arising from them.
  • Handle all information exposed to at the Legal and Company Secretariat unit with the highest standard of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Assist the Company Secretary in filing statutory legal returns at CAC and Corporate Governance Report with the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria within the regulatory timeline.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with relevant legal requirements, particularly under the Company & Allied Matters Act 2020 and the Pension Reform Act 2014.
  • Take and write minutes as directed by the CS/LA.
  • Monitor all legal affairs in the legal and Company Secretariat unit and keep track of regulatory changes affecting the Pension Industry and the legal department.
  • Conduct investigations, statistical/documentary research, locate and develop case-relevant information.
  • Research and prepare legal opinions on various matters, including claims against the company.

Educational Qualifications

  • LLB
  • BL
  • ICSAN
  • A Master's Degree will be an added advantage.

Work Experience / Requirements:

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience.

Skills / Competencies Required:

  • Strong knowledge of corporate law.
  • Commitment and enthusiasm in delivering the company's objectives.
  • Good understanding of general and specific company and commercial law.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision.
  • Good language and legal writing skills.
  • Practical approach to work.
  • Ability to take initiative.
  • Discretion when handling confidential information.
  • Diplomatic approach towards issues.
  • Confidence to provide support to high-profile company staff and board members.
  • Interpersonal skills and the ability to work with people at all levels.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to work well under pressure.
