Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (RC 638640), is one of the eleven successor distribution companies of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). Kaduna Electric, a registered trademark of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, is licensed by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to distribute and retail electricity within a service coverage area of Northwestern-most of Nigeria. It has its Headquarters in Kaduna, with offices in Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara States.

Kaduna Electric is looking to employ young, vibrant professionals to fill the position below in the Engineering and Technical Services Department:

Job Title: Protection and Control Engineer

Job Status: Full-time
Locations: Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara States

Job Summary
  • To develop and issue design and construction drawings and material requirements for Control and Protection projects in line with applicable codes and international standards. This includes design modifications and expansion of Protection & Control system for new and existing substations and distribution lines including SCADA system.
  • Install, terminate, test, troubleshoot and document processes and procedures for commissioning new and upgraded power system control and protection equipment, devices and systems.
  • Apply relay settings, carryout tests on protection and control equipment and troubleshoot protection and control circuits to solve system problem.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare protection and control (including SCADA) conceptual design for power system projects.
  • Carry out power system studies (Fault current/short circuit, Relay coordination, THD etc.) to determine fault level and appropriate relay settings.
  • Design Protection and control (including SCADA) schemes for MV and LV substations and distribution lines.
  • Determine and apply power protection relay settings for substation transformers, 33kV 11kV feeders and 415V distribution network.
  • Carry out/review/analyze complex engineering studies and project scopes.
  • Develop and review technical specifications, drawings and standards of equipment/ projects.
  • Provide guidance and support to other Engineering disciplines, Drafting, Procurement, Construction and Project Management etc.
  • Carry out specialized tests required to analyze and assess inherent faults or condition on power distribution system, including power quality and energy audit.
  • Provide guidance in the selection of equipment and material and preparation of specifications for material, equipment, construction and installation work.
  • Develop relay setting calculations and issue coordination report.
  • Review of internal and external designs for code compliance, good design practice and constructability.
  • Read, interpret and troubleshoot both AC and DC control circuit and diagrams to determine the required corrective actions needed during fault condition.
  • Co-ordinate installation and commissioning activities of power system and provide advice on installation and commissioning procedures and documentation.
  • Produce or assist in the production of all test and commissioning documentation.
  • Undertake testing and commissioning activities in line with the specified site requirements.
  • Construction support including resolving site queries, attending site meetings and performing site inspections during the construction phase of projects
Experience and Minimum Requirements
  • A Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Master's degree /or certification is an added advantage.
  • Minimum of 3-7 year cognate experience
  • Registered Engineer/Professional Membership (NSE, IET, IEEE etc.) is an added advantage.
Competency and Skill Requirements
  • Excellent understanding of power system protection and control devices.
  • Familiarity with power relays and control system devices.
  • Knowledge of Relay standard device numbers and applicable international standards such as IEC, IEEE and ANSI including knowledge of NERC regulations and codes.
  • Proficient in electrical engineering theories and principles.
  • Proficient in practice of engineering design issues, evaluating alternatives and making and presenting sound recommendations.
  • Be adaptable and able to meet deadlines on assignments, juggle multiple demands.
  • Strong skills in planning, problem solving, and timely problem escalation.
  • Ability to write excellent technical report.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
