Role Overview

  • The Art Teacher at Charterhouse Lagos plays a crucial role in fostering creativity, self-expression, and artistic skills among students.
  • This position requires a passionate and experienced educator who can inspire and guide students in exploring various art forms, techniques, and mediums.
  • The Art Teacher will design and deliver engaging lessons, promote cultural appreciation, and create a supportive and inclusive environment where students can develop their artistic talents and express their unique perspectives.

Responsibilities
Curriculum Development and Delivery:

  • Develop a comprehensive art curriculum that aligns with the school’s educational goals and encourages students’ artistic growth and self-expression.
  • Design and deliver engaging lessons that introduce students to various art forms, techniques, and art history.
  • Incorporate a variety of art materials, tools, and technologies to stimulate creativity and provide hands-on experiences for students.

Skill Development and Techniques:

  • Teach students fundamental art skills, including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and mixed media, ensuring a strong foundation in artistic techniques.
  • Guide students in exploring different artistic styles and approaches, encouraging experimentation and personal artistic development.
  • Foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills by engaging students in analysing and interpreting artworks.

Cultural Awareness and Appreciation:

  • Introduce students to diverse artistic traditions, art movements, and artists from different cultures and historical periods.
  • Promote an appreciation for cultural diversity and foster cross-cultural understanding through art activities that explore different cultural perspectives.
  • Encourage students to create artworks inspired by their own cultural backgrounds and heritage.

Creativity and Expression:

  • Nurture students’ creativity and imagination, providing opportunities for self-expression and original thinking through art projects.
  • Encourage students to explore their personal interests, ideas, and emotions, fostering a safe and supportive environment for artistic exploration.
  • Support students in developing their artistic voice and building confidence in their creative abilities.

Classroom Management and Organization:

  • Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment where students feel valued, respected, and encouraged to take risks in their artistic endeavours.
  • Establish clear expectations for behaviour, materials usage, and safety protocols in the art studio.
  • Organize and maintain art supplies, equipment, and resources, ensuring their availability and proper storage.

Assessment and Feedback:

  • Assess students’ artistic progress and growth through a variety of formative and summative assessment methods, including observation, portfolios, and art critiques.
  • Provide constructive feedback to students, recognizing their strengths and offering guidance for improvement.
  • Maintain accurate records of students’ artwork, progress, and achievements.

Collaboration and Professional Development:

  • Collaborate with colleagues to integrate art into interdisciplinary projects and promote cross-curricular connections.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities, workshops, and conferences to stay updated on current art education practices and trends.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts, Art Education, or a related field.
  • A postgraduate Degree or teaching qualification is advantageous.
  • Teaching certification or relevant teaching qualification.
  • Strong artistic skills and a broad knowledge of various art forms, techniques, and art history.
  • Proven experience in teaching art to primary school students, fostering their creativity and artistic development.
  • Excellent instructional and classroom management skills, with the ability to engage and inspire students.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Passion for promoting creativity, self-expression, and cultural appreciation through art education.
  • Familiarity with art materials, tools, and technologies used in the classroom.
