Job Title: USAID State2State Ad Hoc Driver

Location: Nigeria (Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Ebonyi, Gombe & Sokoto)

Position Objectives

  • This Ad Hoc Driver will provide services on an as needed basis when the State2State project driver is not available.
  • The Ad Hoc Driver will be responsible for driving, cleaning, and ensuring preventative maintenance care of the official project vehicle assigned to them.
  • They will assist the State2State office in providing support in transporting staff and contracted consultants to venues within the program partner states, etc. for business purposes.

Responsibilities
The role of the driver is to provide transportation support services, always in a safe and secure manner, within Nigeria when the need arises based on movement requests. Responsibilities include the following:

  • Follow State2State security and safety protocols at all times.
  • Transport State2State staff and consultants, or other designated individuals as pre-approved by the Chief of Party (CoP), between the program office and official business meeting venue as may be assigned by the Finance and Administrative Specialist (FAS) or other appropriately authorized and designated individual.
  • Transport program materials as may be directed in the ordinary course of program work.
  • Ensure adequate safety, cleanliness, security and maintenance of the assigned vehicle at all times.
  • Properly maintain a movement logbook, daily mileage, gas consumption, oil changes, other servicing, etc.
  • Ensure the security of all belongings as kept within the vehicle at all times.
  • At all times, observe and obey the road and traffic laws and regulations of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
  • Ensure safe driving practices are adhered to; including but not limited to local driving codes and internally agreed standards.
  • Ensure that passengers, especially in the front seat (but preferable for all vehicle passengers), always fasten their seatbelt before moving of the vehicle.
  • Ensure there is no use of cigarettes, e-cigarettes or similar type (tobacco related) products by the driver or any passenger at any time in the vehicle.
  • Support the Administrative Assistant (AA) or other office staff with office-related duty as may be assigned. This includes any finance or operations related tasks as deemed appropriate.
  • Report any incident or accident involving the program vehicle immediately by phone to appropriate senior staff in the state field and main program office.

Car Security & Maintenance:

  • Ensure vehicle is kept secure, safe (i.e., roadworthy), clean, tidy and in good working condition at all times.
  • Report any abnormality noticed with the vehicle to the FAS, AA or other appropriate staff immediately; includes when out on business trip.
  • Ensure vehicle is given regular maintenance checks (depending on item) for motor oil level, water/cleaner fluid for windshield, radiator coolant/water, battery charge, brakes, tires (with proper tread and air/inflated), lights (head, backup, brake, running, turn signals), etc.
  • Ensure scheduled vehicle servicing and repairs are conducted properly and in a timely manner by authorized business and in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications.

Others:

  • Vehicle is to be used for official assignments ONLY (and in accordance with the Field Operations Manual (FOM)); vehicle is not to be diverted for personal use.
  • The use of a handheld mobile phone while driving is not allowed. Bluetooth hand-free mobile phone may be used for urgent calls while driving; otherwise, the driver can park in a safe place before answering the call.
  • Dress smartly as part of presentation and program representation; be polite to passengers, police, security personnel and others in conducting of all driver responsibilities.

Reporting:

  • The Ad Hoc Driver will report to the Finance and Administrative Specialist in the state office(s), and the Operations Manager in the Bauchi Main Office (BMO).
  • The Ad Hoc Driver will also work in close coordination with the BMO Project Security Manager, and when appropriate the DAI Nigeria Regional Security Manager based in Abuja.

Minimum Requirements

  • GCE Ordinary level, NECO or any other qualified evidence of successful completion of Secondary School Education with at least three years’ experience driving in a corporate environment (preferably in an NGO, an embassy or with other international agency)
  • A valid driver’s license, Class B
  • Skills technique training by David Bertie is an advantage
  • Excellent listening skills
  • Calmness and good instinct
  • Excellent knowledge of the geography and roads network in the base work location
  • Good communication skills (written & oral)
  • Knowledge of First Aid will be a strong advantage
  • Willingness and ability to work long hours when necessary
  • Willingness and ability to travel at short notice
  • Willingness and ability to train and be trained.
