Ubongo is a social enterprise that seeks to transform learning for the 440 million under 16’s in Africa through interactive edutainment, delivered via accessible technologies. We produce Ubongo Kids, an interactive edu-cartooon that teaches math and science through fun animated stories and catchy original songs. It has has reached over 1.4 million viewers since launch in January (in Kiswahili) and we're getting ready to launch the English version across Africa.

We are in development on a new early childhood cartoon series, as well as many spin-off learning materials such as lessons and quizzes for basic mobiles, and educational story and activity books. As we expand our edutainment offerings to bring more worldclass content to learners in Africa, Ubongo is seeking an Education Manager to join our team in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

We are recruiting to fill the position of:

Responsibilities
  • Take the lead on curriculum development and ensure that we always test and update our pedagogy.
  • Work with our creative team and subject matter experts to develop learning objectives, curriculum and educational scripts. Our math and science programs target children aged of 6-12, and our upcoming ESL program will target children under the age 6.
  • You should have expertise in either of the above areas.
  • Work closely with animators and the entire production team to ensure all topics are taught well and accurately. Review content through all stages of production.
  • Develop supplemental materials to be delivered to children and parents via SMS, interactive voice response, mobile apps, and other media.
  • Perform in-depth user testing of scripts, songs, videos and supplemental content.
  • Help design studies and develop assessments for monitoring and evaluation. Make frequent visits to schools and screening groups to manage M&E.
  • Keep the whole team up to date on best practices in teaching, educational media and ICT for education.
Required Qualifications
  • The imagination and creativity to develop fun new ways for children to learn!
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Education, Instructional Design, Psychology and/or a related field.
  • 3+ years work experience in teaching, instruction design or education-related development work.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Experience working in education in a developing country, preferably in Africa.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent communication skills, out-of-the-box thinking, and the ability to manage multiple tasks with little supervision.
  • Classroom teaching experience and/or experience working with children in informal learning settings.
  • Knowledge of various pedagogical methodologies and up-todate on best practices in education, edtech and ICT4E.
  • Demonstrable storytelling and writing skills.
  • Familiarity with educational impact assessment, study design and data analysis.
  • A deep interest in social enterprise and commitment to changing the world through fun learning
Desired but not required:
  • Proficient in Kiswahili, French or other language widely spoken in Africa.
  • A Master's degree, PhD or EdD in education, instructional design, child psychology or a related field.
  • Experience teaching English as a second language.
