Plan USA took ownership of the Centre for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA) in November 2012. As part of this it also acquired an operating entity in Nigeria (CEDPA Nigeria). This entity is now being transitioned to Plan International Inc., which will lead to the establishment of Plan International Nigeria.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Legal Counsel

To whom does the job holder report to?: Country Director
Location: Abuja

Job Purpose
  • Plan International Nigeria ("Plan Nigeria"), as a branch of Plan International Inc., is required to have access to high quality legal advice, according to standard 3 of the six mandatory Legal Management Standards.
  • The specific objective is to secure a high quality legal practitioner on retainer ship, for a period of one year, to provide legal advice and services for the new Country Office (CO): Plan Internal Nigeria, across all of the CO's needs.
Core Roles and Responsibility
  • Advise PIN on compliance with the existing legal framework of Nigeria vis a vis INGO's and any impending or actual changes in the legal environment.
  • Review of PIN policies and procedures with regard to compliance with Nigerian law.
  • Review of PIN forms and documentations, including right based materials and other legally oriented materials related to project design and implementation in Nigeria.
  • Provide solution driven organizational advice on tax and insurance issues plus other associated transactional counsel,
  • Provide advice on actual and potential litigation especially concerning employment/c8ntractual issues and supplier related contracts.
  • Any other general legal advice.
Key Results & Criteria for Success:
  • The Legal Counsel will provide legal advice and services to support Plans mission and goals through its branch office in Nigeria: Plan Nigeria
Primary Linkages for this Post:
  • Provides the Country Director with a periodic report of the services provided, outlining specific, practical, and substantiated recommendations for minimizing legal risks for the Organization.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Law Degree from a highly regarded Law School
  • Qualified lawyer with a minimum of 5 years post- accreditation experience in corporate law.
  • Current Member in a good standing of a national bar.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills
  • Responsive and sensitive to both business and legal issues.
  • Strong knowledge of international NGOs' operations, including management approaches and program practices.
  • Self-motivated, hardworking, mature, independent and practical.
