With support and input from varied stakeholders, STEM Hub for Empowerment of young women (S.H.E) project's new and innovative approach is designed to encourage the increased participation of adolescent girls and young women in the traditional male spaces of technology, digital skills, and financial literacy. Located in Ikeja, Lagos, the state-of-the-art STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Hub started operations for vulnerable adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) between the ages of 16 and 24 years. They will have the opportunity to participate in youth-friendly training at no cost, following a standardized curriculum with a focus on obtaining standard and globally accredited certifications.

Job Summary

  • The Mental Health Support Instructor is responsible for equipping individuals with the basics of mental health - meaning and importance of Mental Health to adolescent girls and young women.
  • S/he will design, implement, and evaluate training programs that focus on addressing the mental health needs of the AGAYW.
  • S/he will play a vital role in helping individuals lead more fulfilling lives, navigate the critical and stormy nature of adolescence of the modern world, and achieve their personal and professional aspirations.
  • S/he will equip the participants with the knowledge of self with emphasis on self-esteem.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Training / Workshop Delivery:

  • Develop and deliver training sessions to teach the rudiments of mental health, including meaning of mental health, adolescence, adolescent crisis, peer pressure, common mental disorders, journal of gratitude, social media and mental health, self/self-esteem and stress management.
  • Enlighten participants on the need to pay attention to their mental health.

Counselling:

  • Assess and counsel individuals who are experiencing mental health challenges
  • Identify participants who may have attention problems during trainings and offer interventions.
  • Teach and have practical sessions with participants on mindfulness

Health Education:

  • Educate participants on physical and mental health topics, including nutrition, exercise, stress reduction, and self-care.
  • Promote healthy lifestyle choices and behavior modification.
  • Educate participants on the dangers of resorting to substance use in managing Mental health challenges.

Material Development and Lesson Plans:

  • Create educational materials, lesson plans, and resources to support mental health training programs.
  • Continuously update content to reflect current trends and needs.

Assessment of Participants:

  • Evaluate the mental health needs and life map of participants and tailor training programs to meet their specific needs.
  • Develop standard individualized therapy plan for the participants identified with mental health challenges.
  • Monitor progress and provide feedback to encourage growth and development.
  • Refer clients who are survivors of GBV to the CIHP GBV focal person for further interventions.

Record Keeping:

  • Maintain accurate records of participant attendance, progress, and training outcomes.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Collect feedback from participants and use it to improve the quality and effectiveness of the training programs.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Psychology, Sociology, Education, Guidance and Counseling, or a related field (Master's Degree Clinical Psychology is a plus).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in program development and facilitation or training.
  • Knowledge of current educational and psychological trends.
  • Empathy, patience, and the ability to inspire and motivate young people are desirable.
