We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Igbo Language Teacher

Location: Lekki, Lagos
Employment Type: Full-time
Responsible to: Key Stage Heads and the Head of School

Purpose of Job

  • Teachers develop schemes of work and lesson plans in line with curriculum objectives. They facilitate learning by establishing a relationship with pupils, and by their organisation of learning resources and the classroom learning environment; develop and foster the appropriate skills and social abilities to enable the optimum development of children, according to age, ability and aptitude.

Responsibilities

  • Teach all areas of the subject. Prepare objectives and lesson plans, following curriculum guidelines of the school and working with others to plan and coordinate work.
  • Take responsibility for the progress of the pupils. Observe and evaluate pupils' performance, behaviour, social development, and physical health.
  • Organize the classroom and learning resources and createdisplays to encourage a positive learning environment. Plan and conduct activities for a balanced programme of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides pupils with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate; provide a variety of materials and resources for children to explore, manipulate and use both in learning activities and in imaginative play.
  • Plan, prepare and present lessons that cater for the needs of the whole ability range within their class; establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to pupils; mark and grade class work and homework appropriately.
  • Motivate pupils with enthusiastic, imaginative presentation; read books to entire class or small groups.
  • Maintaining discipline: Establish and enforce rules for behaviour and procedures for maintaining order among the pupils for whom they are responsible.
  • Prepare, administer and mark work to facilitate positive pupil development and evaluate pupils’ progress. Meet requirements for the assessment and recording of pupils' development.
  • Provide feedback to parents and carers on a pupil's progress at parents' meetings and other meetings.
  • Keep up with changes and developments in the structure of the curriculum and maintain accurate and complete statutory records as required by administrative regulations.
  • Plan and supervise class projects, field trips and guide pupils in learning from those activities. Organize and take part in school events, outings and activities which may take place at weekends or in the evening.
  • Work with parents and school management to maximize their involvement in the school and the development of resources for the school. Also confer with parents, supervisors, and the Head of School in order to resolve pupils' behavioural and academic problems; meet with parents to discuss their children's progress.
  • Prepare pupils for higher classes by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and to persevere with challenging tasks. Guide and counsel pupils with adjustment and/or academic problems, or special academic interests. Prepare and implement remedial programmes for pupils requiring extra help.
  • Attend professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops in order to maintain and improve professional competence. Meet with other professionals such as education welfare officers and educational psychologists, if required.
  • Use computers, audio-visual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations. Instruct and monitor pupils in the use and care of equipment and materials, in order to prevent injuries and damage.
  • Organize the classroom and learning resources and create displays to encourage a positive learning environment (create an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest corners).
  • Attend staff meetings, and serve on committees as required. Collaborate with other teachers and the Head of School in the development, evaluation, and revision of school programmes.
  • Prepare reports on pupils and activities as required by the school.
  • Organise and lead activities designed to promote physical, mental and social development, such as games/sports, excursions, role play, music, and storytelling. Coordinate extracurricular activities such as clubs, student organisations and competitions.
  • Supervise, evaluate, and plan assignments for assistant teachers.
  • Take responsibility for the progress of the pupils in the class. Involve parent in children's activities through effective communication and feedbacks using communication book.
  • Supervise pupils in and out-of-classroom activities during the school day.
  • Keep up to date with changes and developments in the structure of the curriculum. Participate in curriculum development programmes as required
  • Treat all information relating to a pupil as strictly confidential, and to be aware of and comply with school policy and practice, receiving training where necessary from the school
  • Supervise pupils at home time to ensure that they go home with their books and other personal belongings.

Requirements
Education:

  • Minimum of a Degree in Igbo Language or Linguistics with verifiable teaching experience.
  • Further certifications in education will be of great advantage.
