Center for Advocacy, Transparency and Accountability Initiative (CATAI) is established in 2018 as registered NGO with Head Office in Maiduguri - Borno State, with offices across Yobe and Adamawa state. We have been visible in Borno Adamawa and Yobe states implementing projects in Education, Protection (Child /GBV), WaSH, Nutrition, Empowerment/Livelihood, Governance and Peace Building. Our approach is aligned with our mission to enhance services delivery and empower citizens, through our Humanitarian, Development, and peace building nexus (HDP).

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Protection Officer - PSS

Locations: Madagali & Michiki, Adamawa
Employment Type: Contract

The overall purpose of the role

  • The Protection Officer-PSS will organize and implement PSS activities in Madagali and Michika in protection mobile and static community centers.
  • The Protection Officer - PSS will also create a weekly schedule of activities for the center,identify individuals in need of further assistance, and refer them to sister partner staff for additional services.
  • In addition to this, the protection officer will ensure the quality of the planning, implementation, and follow-up of all technical aspects of the sector activities being implemented by CATAI, as well as develop and maintain good relations with the persons of concern, relevant stakeholders and other humanitarian actors, to support adequate implementation and coordination of CATAI’s sector activities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and provide technical guidance and support (Planning, Implementation, and reporting of all protection activities of the project.
  • Stay abreast of and report as relevant on legal, social, economic, and cultural developments that have an impact on the protection environment.
  • Engage relevant national authorities and structures in identifying and expanding opportunities given developing or strengthening national
  • Facilitate a consultative process with government counterparts, partners, and persons of concern to develop and implement a comprehensive protection PSS and solutions strategy addressing the specific protection needs and concerns of vulnerable women and men, children (OVC), youths and older persons, persons with disabilities, persons living with HIV/AIDS; gender equality and Gender Based Violence (GBV) priorities about these persons.
  • In operations applying the Cluster Approach, seek to ensure the response of the Protection Cluster is grounded in a strategy that covers all assessed and prioritized protection needs of the affected populations.
  • Organize and implement group sessions and adults in the community center such as arts, sports, non-formal education, human development skills, etc.;
  • Lead the set-up and organization of spaces and materials in the community center in preparation for the recreational, psychosocial, awareness-raising, and information dissemination activities;
  • Plan and maintain a schedule of activities at the community center, and propose new ideas for activities;
  • Identifying needs for material and equipment to conduct activities and support CATAI procurement team with the procurement of items;
  • Safely identify and mobilize community members to participate in activities at the community center;
  • Supervise and monitor the registration of participants in activities at the community center;
  • Conducting information-sharing sessions and awareness sessions in the community center on topics identified by CATAI.
  • Awareness-raising sessions regarding the availability of mental health, psychosocial support, and protection services.
  • Safely identify and support protection assistant refer members of the community who require additional assistance and services to CATAI caseworkers by defined referral pathways and Standard Operating Procedures, with a particular focus on high-risk cases;
  • Fill the recreational activities forms and database (as well for other related activities) with accurate information and submit it every week;
  • Strictly abide by the CATAI Code of Conduct;
  • Must adhere to CATAI mission, values, and code of conduct including respect for the principles of neutrality, do not harm, and non-discrimination;
  • Must treat all partners and beneficiaries with dignity and respect.

Job Essential

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and equivalent in any Social Sciences-related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant professional experience in the area of general protection with an NGO, displacement, including experience in working directly with Field Offices.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of DO NO HARM principles and established international child protection standards.
  • Strong ability to work independently, organize work, meet deadlines, maintain composure, prioritize work under pressure, coordinate multiple tasks, and maintain attention to detail.
  • Experience working in emergency settings (deep field), particularly in Northeast Nigeria, and good knowledge of key stakeholders in the area are desirable.

Experience and Technical Competencies:

  • 1 - 2 years of experience in protection-related work with both children and adults;
  • Previous experience providing psychosocial support services;
  • Previous experience in general protection activities including case management and protection monitoring.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, respect, non-discrimination, and safety of clients at all times;
  • Ability to discuss sensitive issues with respect and empathy including ability to provide basic Psychological First Aid services.
  • Knowledge of global MHPSS guidelines.
  • Must be willing to perform other tasks as required by CATAI if relevant.
  • PR-Protection-related guidelines, standards, and indicators
  • PR-Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD).

  • Good knowledge of protection and Human Rights Law and ability to apply the relevant protection principles. Excellent legal research, analytical skills, and drafting.
