Job Title: Consultant Pool - Evidence Review and Designing of Intergenerational Health

Purpose of the Consultancy

  • To review evidence, contribute to designing, assessing implementation of intergenerational approach to strengthen primary health care (PHC) in selected countries in the Western Pacific Region.

Background

  • Countries in the Western Pacific Region have made significant progress in reducing newborn and under-five mortality and increasing life expectancy in the past decades.
  • The improvement in survival of the early period of life has also posed new challenges such as non-communicable diseases (NCDs). “Thrive” beyond “survive” is outlined in the Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescent’s Health (2016-2030), and is highly relevant in the Western Pacific Region, where prevalence of NCDs is increasing and countries are moving towards aging society.
  • Further, many health and social issues, obesity and other NCDs, poverty, lack of education opportunities and abuse are strongly linked across generations.
  • Countries in the Western Pacific Region have requested support from WHO in improving primary healthcare which requires inter-generational approach such as prevention and management of obesity and diabetes.
  • Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO) will first assess the burden of diseases that cut across life stages and generations, review evidence on effective interventions both through community engagement and health systems strengthening and seek strategic approaches to tackle diseases that cut across life stages and generations while responding to requests from countries.

  • Duration: 11 months

Work to be Performed
Based on individual selection and discussions, the consultant(s) will perform selective duties from the below:

  • Technical report 1: Evidence review on burdens of diseases and effective interventions that cut across life stages and generations
  • Technical report 2: Designing conceptual framework, approaches and interventions on intergenerational health
  • Technical report 3: Country Support 1 in implementation and monitoring of public health interventions
  • Technical report 4: Country Support 2 in implementation and monitoring of public health

Methods to Carry out the Activities

  • Document review
  • Technical writing
  • Virtual meetings with WHO regional, country offices and other stakeholders
  • Country support in designing, implementation and monitoring of public health interventions

Specific Requirements
Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Public Health or Social Science (Required)

Experience:

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in public health research and implementation (Required)
  • Extensive experience in literature / document review and publications (Required)
  • Research and implementation on healthy ageing. Working experience with WHO (Desirable)

Technical Skills & Knowledge:

  • Knowledge and skills in literature / document review
  • Knowledge and skills in writing reports
  • Knowledge in healthy ageing

Language:

  • Excellent spoken/written English

Place of Assignment:

  • Off-site support will be provided. Duty travel to WHO WPRO will be scheduled as required by the Maternal Child Health and Quality Safety (MCQ) Unit, and to countries when requested by WHO country offices and Ministries of Health.

Medical Certificate (Consultants only):

  • The selected Consultant will be expected to provide a medical certificate of fitness for work.

Travel:
The Consultant is expected to travel according to the itinerary and estimated schedule below:

  • Travel date(s): 15 to 30 June 2024
  • Location: Fiji
  • Purpose: Support Fiji country office on designing of inter-generational approach to improve prevention and management of obesity and diabetes
  • Travel date(s): 1 to 15 September 2024
  • Location: Solomon Islands
  • Purpose: Support Fiji country office on designing of inter-generational approach to improve prevention and management of obesity and diabetes
