Job Description

  • The School Handyman plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation and maintenance of the school's facilities.
  • This position involves a diverse range of tasks aimed at maintaining a safe, clean, and functional environment conducive to learning. The Handyman must possess a combination of technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and a proactive attitude to address various maintenance issues efficiently.

Job Responsibilities

  • Coordination with Staff and Administration: Collaborating with teachers, staff, and school administration to address facility-related
  • Maintenance and Repairs: Conducting routine inspections, identifying maintenance needs, and performing repairs on school buildings, classrooms, offices, playground equipment, and other facilities. This includes tasks like fixing leaks, repairing broken windows, doors, or furniture, and addressing electrical or plumbing issues.
  • Safety and Security: Ensuring the safety of students, staff, and visitors by regularly checking fire alarms, emergency exits, and other safety equipment. Implementing security measures and conducting security checks to prevent unauthorized access to the school premises.
  • Custodial Duties: Overseeing cleaning and janitorial tasks to maintain a clean and hygienic environment throughout the school. This involves managing cleaning staff or performing cleaning duties yourself.
  • Groundskeeping: Taking care of the school's outdoor spaces, such as lawns, gardens, and sports fields. This includes mowing, weeding, and general landscaping.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Maintaining and repairing various equipment used in the school, such as projectors, audio-visual systems, air conditioning units, and heating systems.
  • Energy Management: Implementing energy-saving measures and ensuring that electrical and heating/cooling systems are functioning efficiently.
  • Budget Management: Keeping track of expenses related to maintenance and facilities management. Sourcing quotes for repairs or equipment purchases and ensuring cost-effective solutions.
  • Contractor Supervision: Overseeing and coordinating work carried out by external contractors, such as electricians, plumbers, or construction companies, when needed.
  • Health and Safety Compliance: Ensuring that the school complies with health and safety regulations and conducting risk assessments to identify potential hazards.
  • Inventory Management: Maintaining an inventory of supplies, tools, and equipment required for maintenance tasks and ordering replacements as needed.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Developing and implementing emergency response plans and participating in drills to prepare for potential crises like fires, natural disasters, or lockdown situations.
  • Collaboration with School Staff: Working closely with teachers, administrators, and other school personnel to understand their facility needs and address any issues promptly.
  • Record Keeping: Maintaining detailed records of maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections for future reference and audit purposes.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identifying opportunities to improve school facilities and processes, proposing upgrades, and contributing to long-term planning for facility improvements.
