Job Title: Legal and Compliance Officer

Location: Abuja (FCT)
Employment Type: Full-time

Position Overview

  • As a Legal and Compliance Officer, you will play a crucial role in ensuring that our company operates within the bounds of the law and maintains compliance with regulatory standards. You will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring policies and procedures to mitigate legal and compliance risks across all aspects of our operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Legal Compliance:

    • Stay abreast of relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards applicable to our business.
    • Interpret and apply legal requirements to company policies and practices.
    • Advise management on legal matters and potential risks.
    • Draft and review contracts, agreements, and other legal documents.
    • Represent the company in legal proceedings, if necessary.
    • Collaborate with external legal counsel as needed.
  • Compliance Management:

    • Develop and implement compliance programs and strategies to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements.
    • Conduct regular compliance audits and risk assessments.
    • Monitor changes in laws and regulations and assess their impact on company operations.
    • Design and deliver training programs on compliance-related topics for employees.
    • Investigate and resolve compliance issues and violations.
  • Policy Development:

    • Develop and maintain company policies and procedures to promote compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
    • Review and update existing policies to reflect changes in laws and regulations.
    • Ensure that policies are effectively communicated and understood by employees.
  • Ethics and Integrity:

    • Promote a culture of ethics, integrity, and accountability throughout the organization.
    • Provide guidance on ethical dilemmas and conflicts of interest.
    • Implement mechanisms for reporting and addressing unethical behavior or misconduct.
  • Risk Management:

    • Identify and assess legal and compliance risks associated with business activities.
    • Develop strategies to mitigate risks and safeguard the company's interests.
    • Implement controls and procedures to monitor and manage risk exposure.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Law.
  • Advanced degree (e.g., JD, LLM) preferred
  • Proven experience (5 years) working in legal and compliance roles, preferably within [Energy, oil and gassector].
  • Thorough understanding of relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high ethical standards.
