Benue State University was established by the Benue State Government with the enactment of the Benue State University Law No. 1 of 1991. It is situated along the Makurdi-Gboko road.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the post of Vice-Chancellor, which will fall vacant by 3rd November, 2015. In accordance with the practice of the University, the process of filling the position has commenced. Interested candidates are to note the following information:

Job Description
  • The Vice-Chancellor is the Chief Executive and Academic Officer of the University, ex-officio Chairman of the Senate, Chairman of Congregation and in the absence of the Chancellor, presides at Convocation of the University.
  • He/she is an ex-officio member of the Governing Council.
The Vice-Chancellor shall, among other duties:
  • Promote research, teaching and high standard of academic excellence;
  • Regulate the admission of students, subject to the guidelines and procedure approved by Senate;
  • Be responsible to Council for the maintenance of peace, law and order on the campus;
  • Be competent at all times to advise the Council on all matters affecting the University;
  • Be responsible for the maintenance of discipline.
Qualities and Qualifications
The candidate for the post of Vice-Chancellor is required to possess the following qualifications and qualities:
  • Good University education
  • Distinguished scholar of the rank of Professor
  • Proven exemplary leadership qualities that will command the respect of staff and students alike;
  • Proven prudence in the management of human and material resources;
  • Outstanding moral character, probity and integrity;
  • Good public relations to build the necessary bridges of understanding between members of the University community on the one hand and the immediate and wider communities on the other;
  • Outstanding emotional, physical and mental stability;
  • Drive and clear vision for the development of the University.
Tenure of Office
The Vice-Chancellor shall hold office for a single term of five years.

Conditions of Service

Conditions of Service are as applicable in Federal/State owned Universities save as the Governing Council of the University may modify from time to time.

Method of Application

Interested and qualified candidates, in not more than four pages, should present his/her Vision Statement for the University, each applicant should submit 30 copies of his/her application accompanied by 30 copies of his/her curriculum vitae both signed and dated.

The sealed envelopes containing the applications should be marked "Vice-Chancellor" at the top left-hand corner and must reach the Registrar within six weeks from the date of this publication.

Note: Each application should include the names and addresses of three referees. Each of the referees should be contacted by the applicant to forward direct to the Registrar, under confidential cover, the reference report properly sealed and marked at the top right-hand corner of the envelope "Referee's Report for the post of Vice-Chancellor".
