Job Title: Senior In-House Legal Counsel

Location: Lagos

Position Overview

  • The Senior In-House Legal Counsel will provide expert legal advice to an educational institution in Lagos, ensuring compliance with laws and regulations while protecting the institution’s interests.
  • This role requires extensive experience in educational law, risk management, and governance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Legal Advisory: Provide strategic legal advice on employment law, student rights, regulatory compliance, and contracts.
  • Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure compliance with Nigerian laws, develop risk management strategies, and mitigate legal risks.
  • Contract Management: Draft, review, and negotiate contracts to protect the institution’s interests and ensure legal compliance.
  • Litigation Management: Handle legal disputes and litigation, working with external counsel when necessary.
  • Policy Development: Develop and update policies, and provide training on legal issues.
  • Governance: Advise the Board of Trustees on legal matters and ensure governance practices comply with regulations.
  • Education & Training: Conduct training on compliance matters and provide legal guidance to staff.
  • Legal Research: Stay updated on legal developments and provide analysis to support decision-making.

Qualifications

  • Law Degree from an accredited institution; licensed to practice in Nigeria.
  • Minimum 6 years of legal experience in a corporate setting.
  • Strong knowledge of Nigerian regulations affecting educational institutions.
  • Experience in contract negotiation, risk management, and legal compliance.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work with diverse stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in an educational environment and advising a Board of Trustees.
