Growth in Value Alliance (GV Alliance) Partners - Our client, a social enterprise that seeks to add value to the knowledge of its audience and create wealth in Africa through a unique blend of publishing and media products. Product portfolio includes 3 book lines, a magazine and a periodic report publication with more to come. The goal is to publish a range of titles from cultural history to contemporary fiction and non-fiction as well as academic and specialised work, with particular interest in work that preserves the stories of significant events and distils the spirit of their time.

Job Description

Job Profile
  • The Deputy Editor is responsible for assuring the integrity; utility and currency of the editorial content of publications assigned to the position.
  • This must be done in the context of strict adherence to the publishing schedule and compliance with standards, including editorial benchmarks and quality assurance measures.
  • Close interaction with support staff and operations personnel (where relevant) is required to carry out the role effectively.
  • The Deputy Editor is also responsible for assisting the team to meet the team's portfolio responsibilities.
  • Additional primary responsibilities of the role include author and/or supplier management, control and development of content in line with customer needs, keeping aware of and ahead of competitor publications, conducting an annual product review to assess the performance of the assigned products, building knowledge of the market and assisting subscribers with queries as required.
  • The individual will achieve this by cohesively working in a team and knowing exactly where to source for raw data.
Responsibilities
  • Editorial: Edit manuscripts for content and organisation to ensure accuracy, currency, relevance, conformance, accessibility and timeliness. Work with the Editor and Editorial Committee on content planning, production scheduling and project management for magazine publication(s). Write material as required as well as commission contributors for the magazine. Perform original research as required. For law reports, ensure that developments in the law are monitored with regards to law reporting. Assist other team members as required.
  • Project Management: Adhere to the publishing schedule for all formats; implement agreed plans for product enhancements. Work within set commercial parameters.
  • Relationship Management: Manage authors and/or suppliers, including contract negotiations, on-going author support, ensuring on-time delivery of manuscript/content and following up on quality issues.
  • Product Development: Work with team, colleagues and customers to develop and implement on-going product development. Participate in the annual cycle of product reviews.
  • Process Improvement: Work with team, colleagues and customers to develop and implement continuous process improvements to achieve best practice.
  • Communication: Build effective relationships with colleagues, customers (internal and external) and management to ensure efficient execution of day-to-day operations and strategic plans.
  • Website Management: Project manage the running of all business websites, report websites and other imprints.
Qualifications/Knowledge
  • Not less than years 3 years (post NYSC) professional working experience
  • Prior publishing or writing experience required
  • A sound level of computer literacy including measurable keyboard skills
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, Framemaker (optional depending upon role), internet skills
  • Sound working knowledge of technologies used in the publishing process
  • Sound working knowledge of publishing workflow from idea conception through to receipt by customer
  • Good communication skills
  • Superior reading comprehension skills
  • Experience in project management and an ability to work to tight deadlines
  • Sound commercial awareness
  • Excellent communication, organisation and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated legal research skills
  • A highly motivated problem solver, with strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent academic record with at least a good Bachelor's Degree in Social Science.
  • NYSC discharge certificate.
