Job Title: Micro Tunnelling Machine Operator

Location: Nigeria

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Operate and control micro tunneling machines for the installation of pipelines under highways, railroads, rivers, and other obstacles.
  • Ensure smooth operation of the tunnel boring machine (TBM) and associated equipment, including alignment, thrust, and cutting components.
  • Monitor the tunnel advance, maintaining a steady and efficient pace to meet project timelines.
  • Strictly adhere to all safety procedures, both underground and on-site, to ensure the health and safety of all team members.
  • Conduct regular safety checks on machinery, tools, and equipment to minimize risks of accidents or failures.
  • Operate MTBM systems for underground tunneling projects.
  • Monitor and control excavation parameters, including thrust, torque, and slurry flow.
  • Ensure proper alignment and grade of the tunnel according to design specifications.
  • Conduct pre-operation checks and routine maintenance of the MTBM.
  • Identify and troubleshoot technical issues during tunneling operations.
  • Collaborate with surveyors, slurry specialists, and project managers for seamless operations.
  • Operate according to the highest environmental standards to prevent damage to surrounding areas, groundwater contamination, or hazardous material incidents.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on the tunnelling machine and related equipment to minimize downtime and ensure optimal operation.
  • Troubleshoot issues related to machine performance, mechanical malfunctions, and other operational difficulties.
  • Collaborate with project managers, site engineers, and other key stakeholders to ensure the tunneling work aligns with overall project requirements and schedules.
  • Maintain a clear and consistent communication line with the tunnel boring machine’s control and monitoring team.
  • Ensure smooth interaction between the micro tunnelling operations and other work phases such as trenchless installation, material handling, and pipeline assembly.
  • Regularly monitor and log the performance of the machine, including operation speed, ground conditions, and the depth of tunneling.
  • Provide detailed reports on daily operations, downtime, machine performance, and any encountered problems.
  • Assess soil and rock conditions and report discrepancies that may impact the tunnelling process or safety.
  • Supervise the monitoring of tunnel alignment, maintaining a straight path with minimal deviation from design.
  • Work with quality control engineers to verify pipeline installation precision and integrity.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, engineering designs, and technical drawings related to the tunneling process.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Candidates should possess a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification or training in tunneling, construction machinery, or underground utilities is highly desirable.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience operating micro tunnelling machines, ideally in pipeline construction or related underground utilities projects, with experience in handling machine controls, monitoring systems, and advanced tunnelling technologies.
  • Must be certified in the following areas of competence: National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH), and Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH)
