Africa Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) is the umbrella organization for applied epidemiology training, programs in Africa. It oversees the Field Epidemiology (and Laboratory) Training Programs (FETP) in 16 countries of Africa. FETP is modeled after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS). The main objective of AFENET through its FETP is to build and offer epidemiological services in the country for strengthening public health systems particularly disease surveillance and response, The program is partly funded by the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). AFENET’s current focus is on interventions for the control of priority diseases in Nigeria, including HIV/AIDS.

We are recruiting to fill the position of:

Job Title: Field Coordinator

Location:
Abuja
Work Hours: Full time, 40 hours/week

Objective
  • To serve as Field Coordinators over a period of 12-24 months. The incumbents will be responsible for providing technical and academic support to residents of the NFELTP posted to various states.
Basic Functions of the Position
  • Provide technical and academic support for the residents of the NFELTP:
  • Guide residents of the program in preparing protocols and tools in the design and conduct of the FELTP practical outputs including study protocols, outbreak investigations and scientific write up.
  • Supervise the residents on the field during outbreak investigation.
  • Provide appropriate guidance to residents in the evaluation of public health surveillance systems and analysis of surveillance dataset.
  • Proof-read and help residents to finalize reports of outbreak investigations, public health surveillance evaluation and analysis of surveillance dataset.
  • Support residents to develop abstracts for national and international scientific conferences as well as presentations at NFELTP organized seminars.
  • Support residents to develop manuscript for publication in peer reviewed journals.
  • Ensure residents bound volumes and the Epi-track database is up to date.
  • Assist in teaching didactic sessions of the program
Position Requirements
Note: All applicants are instructed to address each selection criterion detailed below with specific and comprehensive information supporting each criterion.
  • A degree in Medicine (MBBS or MD) or Veterinary Medicine (DVM), Laboratory sciences, Public Health, Epidemiology or other related fields.
  • Post graduate degree in public health, epidemiology or other related fields. The postgraduate degree should preferably be field epidemiology or applied epidemiology in nature or its equivalent.
  • Preferably an NFELTP graduate with graduation certificate from the university and NFELTP completion proof.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years post qualification (or post first degree) experience.  Those with past experience in mentoring and supervising trainees at graduate and postgraduate level will have an added advantage. Graduates of NFELTP will be preferred.
  • Previous experience with HIV/AIDS program and Vaccine Preventable Disease activities will be an added advantage
  • Professional training and extensive knowledge in field epidemiology including publication and presentation at international conferences.
  • Good understanding of NFELTP programs will be an added advantage
  • Excellent relationship with partner ministries, department and agencies of Government
  • Level IV (fluency) Speaking/ Writing in English is required.
  • Incumbent should possess basic computer skills with experience in Microsoft Word & Excel packages and data analysis statistical software.
