Job Title: Senior Credit Underwriter

Location: Lagos

About the role

  • The Senior Credit Risk Underwriter will oversee all SME loan and overdraft lending applications that require manual underwriting across a broad range of industry sectors.
  • You will be responsible for ensuring lending remains within Risk Appetite and that performance is maintained within agreed target loan loss levels.
  • Reporting to the Head of Credit Risk Analytics, you will also be expected to continually innovate and identify areas of risk and opportunity within the portfolio, leveraging key data sources and indicators to ensure effective ongoing credit risk management of the portfolio.
  • You will also work closely with a range of business partners, including Product and Data Engineering teams, to support new strategic product initiatives to drive the growth objectives of the business.

What you’ll get to do

  • Review SME lending applications and financial data.
  • Performing credit reviews and deep-dives on the portfolio back book.
  • Drive and support change in underwriting strategy and structure.
  • Interacting with a broad range of functions and stakeholders to drive credit risk maturity across the business.
  • Facilitating Risk initiatives and pilots by reviewing credit data
  • Conducting periodic reviews of individual bad debts

To succeed in this role, we think you should have

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in SME underwriting in Nigeria (unsecured/secured) across a broad range of industry sectors.
  • Expert in the manual underwriting of large value lending through a broad range of data sources (e.g. Financials and Bank Statements).
  • Strong awareness of Compliance and the Regulatory environment within Nigeria.    
  • Demonstrable experience of underwriting best practice and standards..

Relevant Skills:

  • Significant expertise in the manual underwriting of SME lending in Nigeria (essential).
  • Data driven and logical thinker.
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
