Job Title: Accident & Emergency (A&E) Registered Nurse

Location: Lagos

Job Summary

  • A Registered Accident & Emergency (A&E) Nurse in Nigeria plays a pivotal role in providing immediate and critical care to patients who present with life-threatening injuries, illnesses, or emergencies.

Responsibilities
Their functions include:

  • Initial Assessment and Triage: Quickly assess patients as they arrive in the emergency department, prioritizing care based on the severity of their condition using triage protocols.
  • Emergency Care: Provide life-saving interventions such as CPR, wound management, stabilization of trauma patients, and administration of medications (e.g., pain relief, emergency drugs, etc.) to stabilize patients.
  • Monitoring and Support: Continuously monitor patients' vital signs and condition, ensuring immediate interventions for any changes in their health status.
  • Collaboration with Healthcare Team: Work alongside doctors, paramedics, lab technicians, and other healthcare professionals to formulate and implement appropriate treatment plans for emergency patients.
  • Patient Management: Provide initial care to patients, including dressing wounds, controlling bleeding, administering IV fluids, and assisting in procedures like intubation, catheterization, or setting fractures.
  • Patient Education and Support: Offer support to patients and their families, providing information on the diagnosis, treatment options, and care after discharge from the emergency unit.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain detailed and accurate patient records, documenting assessments, treatments, interventions, and patient responses.
  • Infection Control: Ensure proper hygiene, sanitation, and infection control practices to prevent cross-contamination, especially in the fast-paced and high-risk environment of the emergency room.
  • Emotional and Psychological Support: Provide emotional support to patients and their families, especially in traumatic or stressful situations.
  • Handling Multi-Casualty Situations: In the case of mass casualty incidents, A&E nurses play a role in managing a large influx of patients, prioritizing care according to the urgency of their condition.

Requirements

  • Registered A&E Nurses in Nigeria must be trained in emergency nursing care and registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).
  • They typically work in fast-paced, high-pressure environments and need to be able to make quick, effective decisions in critical situations.
