Job Title: HVAC Design Engineer – Preconstruction & Proposal Development

Role Overview
- The HVAC Engineer is responsible for leading the technical response efforts for Invitations to Bid, Requests for Proposals, and detailed mechanical construction packages.
- The role prepares HVAC system designs, engineering calculations, bill of materials, technical narratives, drawings, cost inputs, and compliance documents required to submit complete and competitive proposal packages.
- The ideal candidate is skilled in both HVAC engineering and construction estimating workflows.
- This position works closely with estimators, project managers, and executive leadership to create accurate, high-quality proposals that increase SMC Mechanical’s win rate and ensure engineering alignment with field execution.
Key Responsibilities
ITB, RFP, and Proposal Response Preparation:
- Review bid documents, drawings, addendums, specifications, and scope narratives from general contractors.
- Generate complete HVAC technical response packages, including system descriptions, compliance matrices, and design concepts.
- Prepare preliminary HVAC layouts, equipment selections, and system schematics.
- Develop technical narratives supporting design intent, value engineering options, and constructability recommendations.
- Identify scope gaps, exclusions, clarifications, and risk factors requiring internal review.
- Support the estimating team with system design assumptions and competitive pricing strategies.
HVAC Engineering & System Design:
- Perform HVAC load calculations, equipment sizing, and ventilation calculations.
- Select appropriate HVAC systems (RTUs, VRF/VRV, chilled water, hot water, packaged units, exhaust, controls).
- Review and interpret mechanical codes including IMC, ASHRAE, and energy codes.
- Translate conceptual drawings into preliminary engineering documents.
- Coordinate with manufacturers to verify equipment performance and budget pricing.
Costing, Estimating, and Bill of Materials:
- Prepare bills of materials for ductwork, piping, equipment, and controls.
- Provide labor and material quantities using digital takeoff tools.
- Collaborate with estimators to validate cost assumptions.
- Review vendor quotes and subcontractor pricing.
Coordination and Stakeholder Engagement:
- Collaborate with project managers, estimators, engineers, and field teams.
- Attend pre-bid meetings, job walks, and technical calls.
- Coordinate with GCs, architects, and MEP consultants to resolve inconsistencies.
Quality Control & Documentation:
- Ensure proposals meet HVAC code requirements and project specifications.
- Prepare compliance documentation, schedules, engineering assumptions, and drawings.
- Maintain accurate bid files for audit and future use.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- 7+ years in Mechanical/HVAC construction or HVAC engineering.
- Experience with commercial and industrial HVAC systems.
- Registered/Chartered/Professional Engineer license or equivalent certification.
- Experience responding to ITBs/RFPs.
Requirements:
- Proficiency in HVAC system design, load calculations, and equipment sizing.
- Ability to interpret mechanical drawings and specifications.
- Proficiency with HVAC tools such as Carrier HAP, Trane Trace, AutoCAD, Revit, and Bluebeam.
- Strong knowledge of IMC, ASHRAE, and energy codes.
