The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) Abuja is a 500-bed specialty hospital offering world-class comprehensive diagnostics and treatment in oncology, cardiovascular, and haematological care, and general medical and surgical services, along with top notch research and education. The AMCE will provide exceptional care to people on the African continent, regardless of their financial means. Developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in clinical partnership with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust., AMCE Abuja is the first of five centres planned for development in Africa.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Cancer Registrar

Location: Abuja

Job Purpose

  • The Cancer Registrar will play a critical role in supporting cancer research, surveillance, and quality improvement at the African Medical Center of Excellence (AMCE).
  • The role holder will be responsible for collecting, abstracting, and maintaining accurate and comprehensive data on cancer cases within the facility.
  • The role requires meticulous attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and a deep understanding of cancer registry principles and procedures.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities
Case Finding and Abstraction

  • Identify and abstract data on all new cancer cases diagnosed at AMCE from medical records, pathology reports, and physician documentation.
  • Collect patient demographics, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up information following international standards.
  • Perform regular audits and quality checks to ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of data.

Data Entry and Management

  • Enter abstracted information into the cancer registry database with precision and consistency.
  • Maintain the confidentiality, security, and integrity of sensitive patient records.
  • Generate cancer incidence and outcome reports for clinical and research use.

Data Analysis and Reporting

  • Assist in analysing registry data to identify patterns, trends, and outcomes.
  • Prepare reports for internal stakeholders, public health agencies, and regulatory authorities.
  • Contribute to research publications and institutional cancer statistics.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Liaise with physicians, nurses, pathologists, and other healthcare professionals to validate and complete patient data.
  • Support coordination between AMCE and state/national cancer registries.
  • Provide data and insights to support oncology research, clinical trials, and hospital-wide cancer initiatives.

Professional Development

  • Stay current with cancer registry standards, staging systems, and best practices.
  • Participate in professional development activities, workshops, and training sessions.
  • Support institutional efforts to enhance cancer data quality and research capacity.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Health Information Management, Medical Records, Public Health, Epidemiology, or a related field (preferred).
  • Relevant training or certification in health information management or cancer registry operations (desirable).
  • Strong knowledge of cancer registry principles, coding, and abstraction standards.
  • Understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and oncology-related terminology.
  • Awareness of data confidentiality and healthcare privacy regulations.

Experience:

  • 1–3 years’ experience as a Cancer Registrar or in a related role (e.g., medical records, data abstraction, or epidemiology) preferred.
  • Prior experience with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems and cancer registry software is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with cancer staging systems (e.g., TNM, ICD-O).
