We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Firewatcher

Location: Port Harcourt, Rivers
Job type: Contract
Reports to: HSE Officer / Fire Chief
Department/Division Unit: HSE / Emergency Response

Job Summary

  • The Firewatcher is responsible for monitoring hot work areas to prevent fires and ensure immediate response in case of ignition. They serve as the primary line of defence during welding, cutting, and grinding operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Continuously monitor the hot work area for fire hazards before, during, and after operations (typically 30 mins post-work).
  • Ensure appropriate fire extinguishers are available, charged, and correct for the hazard type.
  • Inspect the hot work area to ensure flammable materials are removed or covered with fire blankets.
  • Stop work immediately if a hazard arises or if conditions become unsafe.
  • Sound the alarm in case of fire and attempt to extinguish small fires if safe to do so.
  • Ensure hot work permits are valid and posted at the work site.
  • Prevent unauthorized entry into the hot work zone.
  • Communicate effectively with welders and supervisors.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Zero fire incidents during watch duty.
  • 100% compliance with post-work monitoring times.
  • Availability and readiness of fire equipment.

Required Qualifications

  • Candidates should possess an SSCE / WAEC / NECO.
  • Trade Test Certificate is an added advantage.

Professional Certifications & Licenses

  • Basic Fire Fighting Training Certificate.
  • Authorized Gas Tester (AGT) certification (desirable).
  • HSE Level 1 (NISP).

Experience Requirements

  • Must have 1-2 years of experience in a similar role in construction or industrial sites.

Technical Skills & Competencies:

  • Practical knowledge of operating fire extinguishers (P.A.S.S technique).
  • Ability to recognize fire hazards (Class A, B, C, D, K fires).
  • Understanding of Gas Testing basics.

Working Conditions:

  • High-heat environments, exposure to welding fumes and sparks.
  • Standing for long periods.

Physical Requirements

  • Visual acuity to detect smoke or sparks.
  • Physical ability to carry fire extinguishers and react quickly.
