About the Role

  • We are looking for a commercially astute and experienced legal professional to lead our Group Legal function.
  • The Head of Legal will serve as principal legal adviser to the Board and executive management, providing enterprise-wide legal oversight across all subsidiaries operating in fintech, real estate, energy, and other sectors — both within Nigeria and across Africa.
  • The ideal candidate brings deep knowledge of multiple subsidiary environments, an ability to navigate diverse African regulatory landscapes, and the leadership presence to anchor legal strategy at the highest level of the organisation.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Group Legal department and ensure legal compliance across all subsidiaries and business units in Nigeria and across Africa.
  • Provide expert legal advice to the Board, senior management, and relevant departments on a wide range of corporate, commercial, and regulatory matters.
  • Develop and implement a cohesive group-wide legal strategy that reflects the operational realities and regulatory environments of each subsidiary.
  • Maintain a robust and current understanding of the structure, activities, and legal obligations of each subsidiary — spanning fintech, real estate, energy, and other sectors.
  • Manage and mitigate legal risks by designing and implementing group-wide policies, compliance frameworks, and internal procedures.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, joint ventures, shareholder agreements, and other high-value commercial documents across all business lines.
  • Support mergers, acquisitions, and cross-border transactions involving group subsidiaries in Nigerian and other African markets.
  • Represent the organisation in legal proceedings, regulatory engagements, and negotiations; coordinate external legal counsel across relevant jurisdictions where necessary.
  • Liaise with regulatory bodies including the CAC, SEC, CBN, and their equivalents in other African jurisdictions where the group operates.
  • Ensure sound corporate governance practices across all subsidiary boards and maintain good regulatory standing for all group entities.
  • Keep abreast of changes in laws and regulations across all relevant jurisdictions and advise the business on required responses.
  • Train, mentor, and develop junior legal staff within the department.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from an accredited institution; an LLM in Corporate, Commercial, or International Law is an added advantage.
  • Called to the Nigerian Bar and licensed to practice law; membership of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in good standing.
  • 10+ years of post-call legal experience, with a significant portion in a corporate or in-house leadership role.
  • Demonstrated experience providing legal support across multiple subsidiaries or business units within a group or conglomerate structure.
  • Extensive knowledge of Nigerian corporate law, CAMA 2020, and relevant sector-specific regulations — including fintech, real estate, and energy.
  • Proven familiarity with regulatory frameworks across African jurisdictions where the group operates or intends to expand.
  • Experience managing legal teams and providing strategic legal advice at the executive level.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and the highest level of professional integrity.
