Job Summary

  • A secondary English teacher instructs students (typically 6th-12th grade) in literature, writing, and language, developing critical thinking and literacy skills.
  • Responsibilities include creating lesson plans, grading assignments, facilitating discussions, managing classroom behavior, preparing students for exams, and providing feedback to help students achieve learning objectives.

Core Responsibilities

  • Curriculum Delivery: Planning and delivering engaging lessons covering literature, grammar, and writing styles.
  • Assessment: Setting, marking, and returning assignments, tests, and exams in accordance with school policies.
  • Classroom Management: Ensuring a safe, positive, and productive learning environment that encourages high standards of behavior.
  • Student Support: Monitoring progress, conducting one-on-one sessions, and supporting students with special educational needs or learning gaps.
  • Communication: Meeting with parents/guardians to discuss academic progress and maintaining professional relationships.
  • Professional Development: Staying updated with teaching methods, curriculum changes, and incorporating technology into lessons.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree in English, Education, or a related field, often requiring teaching certification/licensure.

  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written skills, with the ability to engage teenagers.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to handle lesson planning, tracking, and grading for multiple classes.
