Job Title: ICU Nurse

Location: Port Harcourt, Rivers

Role Overview

  • The Intensive Care Unit Nurse provides clinical care to and supports the recovery of patients suffering from acute and long-term illnesses, diseases, or those requiring surgery.
  • The post holder must have the ability to work effectively both independently and within a multi-disciplinary/ multi-cultural team in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to deliver the highest quality of care.

Key Responsibilities
Clinical & Critical Care:

  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized patient care for critically ill patients.
  • Undertake nursing interventions based on best available evidence and respond promptly to changes in patient condition.

Emergency Procedure Management:

  • Perform advanced monitoring and interventions for ICU/CCU patients, including life support measures.
  • Administer medications and treatments safely, adhering to ICU protocols and physician orders.

Quality Control & Compliance:

  • Adhere strictly to hospital policies, infection prevention protocols, and ICU/CCU clinical guidelines.
  • Maintain high standards of care, integrating quality improvement initiatives and supporting accreditation activities.

Safety Management:

  • Ensure patient and staff safety by identifying hazards and implementing preventive measures.
  • Ensure all ICU equipment and devices are maintained and used according to manufacturer instructions and hospital policy.

Communication & Coordination:

  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and multidisciplinary ICU/CCU teams.
  • Provide structured handovers and clinical updates to ensure continuity of care.

Problem-Identification & Escalation:

  • Detect early signs of patient deterioration, complications, or operational issues.
  • Take appropriate actions within the scope of practice and escalate complex cases to the Unit Manager or treating physician.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in Intensive Care and Coronary Care unit nursing (recent experience preferred).
  • Registered Nurse (RN) with a valid practicing license.
  • Proficiency in ICU/CCU monitoring, emergency interventions, and advanced patient care.
  • Knowledge of infection control, risk management, patient safety, and hospital protocols.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills in a multidisciplinary surgical environment.
  • Ability to prioritize care, act decisively in emergencies, and maintain meticulous documentation.
  • Flexibility regarding shift patterns and clinical areas.
  • Experience mentoring or teaching junior staff is an advantage.
