We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: French Teacher

Location: Abuja
Job Type: Full-time

Job Purpose

  • To deliver engaging and high-quality teaching in French, enabling students to develop strong language proficiency, cultural awareness, and confidence in communication.
  • The role aims to instill a lifelong appreciation for languages and foster international-mindedness within the school community.

Overview of the Role

  • The Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) Teacher will teach French to students across various year groups and ability levels, ensuring progression in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
  • The postholder will also contribute to curriculum design, enrichment activities, and cultural events that promote language learning across the school.

Relationship:

  • The MFL Teacher is appointed by the Director of Schools in consultation with the Head of School (HOS), KS Coordinator (KSC), and HR.
  • The MFL Teacher reports directly to the KS Coordinator and, in their absence, to the HOS/Deputy HOS. They will collaborate closely with other teachers, parents/guardians, and external partners such as visiting language assistants or exchange programme coordinators.

Responsibilities
Teaching & Learning:

  • Plan and deliver well-structured, interactive lessons in French aligned with the school’s curriculum and learning objectives.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners, including those with additional learning needs or language support requirements.
  • Promote accurate pronunciation, strong grammar foundations, and practical communication skills in both languages.
  • Integrate cultural content to deepen students’ appreciation of Francophone cultures.

Assessment & Feedback:

  • Regularly assess student progress using a range of formative and summative strategies.
  • Provide high-quality marking and personalised feedback to help students improve.
  • Track and record attainment and effort in line with school policy.
  • Prepare students for internal assessments and any external examinations as required.

Enrichment & Extra-Curricular;

  • Organise and lead language clubs, competitions, and cultural days.
  • Support or lead trips and exchange programmes that enhance language learning experiences.
  • Contribute to whole-school events that promote global citizenship and intercultural understanding.

Professional Practice:

  • Engage in continuous professional development to enhance subject knowledge and pedagogy.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, collaborative planning, and curriculum review.
  • Uphold the school’s standards for discipline, respect, and integrity in all interactions.

Safeguarding:

  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of all students in line with the school’s safeguarding policies and procedures.

Qualifications & Experience
Required:

  • QTS/TRCN certification.
  • Degree in French or a related discipline (Languages, Linguistics, etc.).
  • Fluency in French (spoken and written).
  • Strong subject knowledge and proven classroom teaching skills.

Preferred:

  • Experience teaching in a British curriculum school.
  • Experience preparing students for external language qualifications or assessments.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Student Achievement:

  • At least 80% of students meet or exceed their target grades in French.
  • Demonstrated improvement in language proficiency (listening, speaking, reading, writing) across the academic year.

Lesson Quality & Preparedness;

  • 100% of lesson plans submitted on time, showing clear objectives, differentiation, and cultural integration.
  • Achieve a minimum of 90% “Good” or above in lesson observations.

Engagement & Enrichment;

  • Maintain 90%+ student attendance in language classes.
  • Lead at least one cultural or language-related extra-curricular activity per term.

Assessment & Feedback;

  • Return all marked work within 7 working days, with actionable improvement suggestions.
  • Conduct at least two formal assessments per term for each year group taught.

Curriculum Delivery:

  • Ensure 100% syllabus coverage in both languages by the set departmental deadlines.
  • Incorporate cultural and cross-curricular links in at least one lesson per half term.

Professional Development & Contribution:

  • Attend minimum 2 relevant PD courses or workshops annually.
  • Contribute to at least two whole-school or departmental events each year.

Assessment, Recording and Reporting:

  • Assess how well learning objectives have been achieved and use outcomes to adapt teaching accordingly;
  • Provide quality marking and feedback and identify clear targets for future learning as appropriate
  • Carry out assessment cycles (e.g., collection of effort and attainment assessments, reports) as agreed by the school.
  • Be familiar with the Code of Practice for identification and assessment of Special Educational Needs and keep appropriate records on Individual Education Plans for pupils.
