Job Title: Civil Engineer - Construction

Location: Lagos
Employment Type: Full-time

Job Summary

• The Civil Engineer will oversee construction projects from inception to completion. You will be responsible for planning, designing, and supervising the construction of infrastructure while ensuring all activities comply with safety regulations, environmental standards, and budgetary constraints. This role requires a balance of office-based design/analysis and on-site supervision.

Key Responsibilities
Project Planning & Design:

• Conduct feasibility studies and site investigations (soil testing, topographical surveys).
• Use CAD software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D) to develop blueprints and detailed technical drawings.
• Analyze maps, survey reports, and geological data to plan projects.
• Estimate material, equipment, and labor costs to determine economic feasibility.

Site Supervision & Execution:

• Direct and monitor progress at construction sites to ensure adherence to design specs.
• Maintain "line level" and ensure the skeletal integrity of structures (e.g., steel frameworks) before concreting.
• Coordinate with subcontractors, architects, and site workers to ensure the project stays on schedule.

Compliance & Safety:

• Ensure all construction activities meet local, state, and federal building codes.
• Compile and submit permit applications to regulatory agencies.
• Assess environmental impacts and potential risks (seismic activity, wind stress, water drainage).
• Implement and enforce strict health and safety (HSE) protocols on-site.

Resource Management:

• Manage the procurement and usage of raw materials to prevent waste.
• Review and evaluate tenders from construction firms or suppliers.
• Supervise junior technicians and field staff.

Required Skills & Qualifications
Technical Skills:

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field (Structural/Construction Engineering).
• Licensing: Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent professional membership (e.g., NIA, ICE, or ASCE).
• Software: Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Project Management software (MS Project or Primavera).
• Analysis: Strong grasp of physics, advanced calculus, and trigonometry.

Soft Skills:

• Problem Solving: Ability to resolve design discrepancies or unexpected site challenges quickly.
• Leadership: Experience managing diverse teams of laborers and subcontractors.
• Communication: Clear verbal and written skills for reporting status to stakeholders.
• Attention to Detail: Precision in checking calculations and material quality.

Work Environment:

• Setting: A split between a professional office environment and active construction sites.
• Conditions: Must be comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions and wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Hours: Typically 40 hours per week, with occasional overtime required to meet project deadlines.
