We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Civil Engineer (Buildings)

Location: Abuja (FCT) 
Employment Type: Full-time

Job Summary

  • The Civil Engineer (Buildings) will be responsible for the structural design review, technical supervision, and quality assurance of civil and structural works across assigned building projects.
  • The ideal candidate has a solid grounding in structural engineering principles, hands-on site supervision experience on multi-storey or complex building projects, and the technical discipline to ensure all civil works are delivered to specification, on schedule, and within approved budgets.

Key Responsibilities
Structural Design Review & Coordination:

  • Review structural drawings, calculations, and specifications produced by consulting structural engineers. Coordinate with architects, MEP engineers, and the QS to ensure buildability, clash-free construction, and specification compliance before work commences on site.

Site Supervision Civil & Structural Works:

  • Supervise all civil and structural construction activities, including excavation, piling and foundation works, reinforced concrete frames, flat slabs, staircases, retaining walls, and below-ground drainage and waterproofing systems.

Concrete & Materials Quality Control:

  • Oversee the quality of all concrete works, mix design approval, batching, pouring, curing, and cube testing. Monitor reinforcement placement and cover against approved drawings. Reject non-conforming materials and maintain all test certificates on file.

Setting Out & Survey:

  • Coordinate and verify setting-out activities, grid lines, levels, column positions, and slab elevations to ensure structural accuracy throughout the construction process.

Substructure & Geotechnical Works:

  • Supervise foundation construction in accordance with geotechnical investigation reports. Monitor soil conditions during excavation, escalate unexpected conditions, and liaise with the geotechnical consultant on foundation variations.

Programme & Progress Monitoring:

  • Track the progress of civil and structural packages against the master programme. Identify delays, report on critical path impacts, and collaborate with the Project Manager to develop recovery plans.

Subcontractor Supervision:

  • Manage civil and structural subcontractors day-to-day. Conduct and document daily site inspections, issue site instructions (SIs), and raise non-conformance reports (NCRs) where work deviates from specification.

Documentation & Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate site diaries, inspection test plans (ITPs), concrete pour records, and materials registers. Contribute to weekly and monthly project reports submitted to the Project Manager.

Design Team Interface:

  • Act as the on-site technical liaison between the construction team and structural/civil design consultants. Raise RFIs and technical queries promptly and track their resolution to avoid construction delays.

Qualifications and Requirements
Education:

  • Minimum of B.Sc / B.Tech / HND in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering.
  • A postgraduate degree (M.Sc in Structural Engineering or Construction Management) is an added advantage.

Professional Certification:

  • Graduate membership or full registration with COREN is required. NSE membership is expected. PMP, PRINCE2, or SMSTS certification is an advantage.

Experience:

  • 5–8 years of progressive civil/structural engineering experience, with demonstrable hands-on site supervision on multi-storey residential, commercial, or institutional building projects in Nigeria.

Technical Skills:

  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, road design software (CLIP, HIGHWAY DESIGNER, or equivalent), and MS Office suite. Working knowledge of AASHTO and the Nigerian Highway Manual. Familiarity with construction ERP and project management tools is an advantage.
  • Location: Must be willing to travel to project sites across Nigeria as required.

  • Strong technical foundation in structural engineering theory and its practical application on building construction sites.
  • Meticulous attention to detail in reviewing drawings, checking reinforcement placement, and verifying concrete works against specifications.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex structural and architectural drawings, schedules, and specifications accurately.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, able to engage contractors, consultants, and the project management team constructively
  • Proactive problem-solving mindset: identifies construction challenges early and proposes practical, cost-effective solutions.
  • High degree of integrity, professionalism, and accountability in managing people, resources, and financial information.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritise competing demands, and maintain quality at all times.
  • A proactive approach to risk identifies issues early and acts decisively to protect project outcomes.
