Job Title: Accountant

About the Role

  • We’re hiring an Accountant to manage day-to-day accounting, tax compliance, and reporting in a fast-paced, high-volume retail environment similar to Shoprite settings.
  • You’ll ensure accurate financial records and full compliance with Nigeria’s latest tax regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Financial Accounting & Reporting
  • Maintain accurate ledgers for sales, purchases, inventory, and expenses in a multi-store setup.
  • Prepare monthly management accounts, P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow statements.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, intercompany accounts, and supplier/vendor statements.

Tax Compliance – Nigeria Tax Law 2024/2025:

  • Handle VAT, WHT, CIT, and PAYE calculations and filings in line with the new Nigeria Tax Law.
  • Liaise with FIRS and LIRS on audits, assessments, and tax queries.
  • Ensure proper tax invoicing and documentation to support input VAT claims.
  • Advise the business on tax implications of new promos, supplier contracts, and transactions.

Retail Operations Accounting:

  • Oversee daily POS and cash reconciliation across multiple tills and stores.
  • Manage supplier invoicing, GRN matching, and payment processing for high-volume SKU transactions.
  • Support inventory costing, stock loss analysis, and shrinkage investigations.
  • Work with store ops and supply chain to resolve discrepancies in real-time.

Internal Controls & Audit:

  • Enforce financial controls to prevent fraud and leakage in a cash-heavy environment.
  • Coordinate internal and external audits, providing schedules and supporting docs.
  • Implement process improvements to speed up month-end close.

Requirements

  • B.Sc/HND in Accounting, Finance, or related field. ACA/ACCA/CPA in progress or completed is an advantage.
  • 4–7 years accounting experience, with minimum 2 years in retail, FMCG, or mass retail like Shoprite, SPAR, or Justrite.
  • Hands-on experience with Nigeria’s current tax law: VAT, WHT, CIT, PAYE, and the Finance Act/Tax Reform updates.
  • Strong knowledge of Excel, ERP/accounting software
  • Experience handling high transaction volumes and tight month-end deadlines.
  • Familiarity with retail KPIs: gross margin, shrinkage, stock turn, supplier rebates.
