Purpose
- BBC Yoruba digital service aims to deliver our journalism in a lively and engaging fashion, with a focus on interactivity and the promotion of content on social media and across all platforms.
- As one of our video journalists, you’ll have a crucial role in leading our engagement with the audience.
- By joining BBC Yoruba, you’ll be a part of a media team that serves audiences in Nigeria, West Africa, and other parts of the world.
Key Responsibilities And Impact
- Create bespoke optimized content, including social media posts, reports, compilations, interviews, discussions, ‘explainers’, feature video, photos, and other editorial content for social media networks and all BBC Yoruba platforms. Ensure that any output material meets the standards required by the BBC.
- Work with other members of the Yoruba and Nigeria team, and the wider BBC Africa newsroom, to identify and produce innovative video news content. Contribute ideas and angles to meetings on how to cover the main news of the day.
- Re-version BBC material with a mobile audience (verticals) in mind. Experiment with emerging tools and platforms.
- Create multimedia content for publication on social media and BBC Yoruba mobile audiences, maintaining professional journalistic standards of accuracy, impartiality and adhering to BBC Editorial guidelines.
- Research, storyboard and produce stories. Create headlines and video teasers to promote stories and reach a wide audience. Show visual creativity using pictures and graphics to illustrate and explain fast-moving events and complex stories. Work to short deadlines for breaking and developing stories.
- May be required to travel on short reporting trips and assignments. All staff may be required to work across teams, apply a range of skills flexibly, and carry out responsibilities in line with BBC standards and values.
Your Skill and Experience
Essential Criteria:
- A full command and up-to-date knowledge of written and spoken Yoruba and English
- Experience in video production, editing, and storytelling, including video editing software such as FCP or similar
- In-depth understanding of digital and social platforms and how audiences consume news in Africa
- A strong journalistic track record with knowledge of Africa and African affairs, including social-first content production and audience engagement
- Wide and up-to-date familiarity with Africa, Nigeria and West African affairs, including history, politics, social issues and culture, and changing audience needs
- Proven editorial judgment and flair, able to make sound decisions quickly, with knowledge of BBC Editorial Guidelines
- Ability to work well with other producers, reporters, and teams, and remain calm in a live newsroom environment with a rapidly changing news agenda.
