The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) Abuja is a 500-bed specialty hospital offering world-class comprehensive diagnostics and treatment in oncology, cardiovascular, and haematological care, and general medical and surgical services, along with top notch research and education. The AMCE will provide exceptional care to people on the African continent, regardless of their financial means. Developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in clinical partnership with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust., AMCE Abuja is the first of five centres planned for development in Africa.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Purpose

  • The Molecular Pathologist will be responsible for leading and delivering advanced molecular diagnostic services at the African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE).
  • This role is critical for supporting precision medicine by performing and interpreting molecular tests for the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment guidance of cancers, infectious diseases, genetic disorders, and other conditions.
  • The role holder will oversee all aspects of the molecular pathology laboratory, including test development, quality assurance, and result reporting.
  • He/ She will demonstrate expert knowledge of molecular biology techniques, strong analytical skills, and a deep commitment to patient-centered diagnostic excellence.

Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities
Molecular Diagnostic Testing & Interpretation:

  • Perform and supervise a wide range of molecular tests, including PCR, real-time PCR, next-generation sequencing (NGS), Sanger sequencing, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and fragment analysis.
  • Interpret complex molecular test results, correlating them with clinical, histological, and immunohistochemical findings.
  • Provide diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive reports to guide targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and personalized treatment plans.

Test Development & Validation:

  • Develop, optimize, and validate new molecular assays to meet emerging clinical and research needs.
  • Establish and maintain laboratory protocols, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and reference ranges for all molecular tests.
  • Lead the implementation of new technologies and platforms, ensuring rigorous analytical and clinical validation.

Quality Assurance & Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensure the molecular pathology laboratory operates in compliance with international standards (e.g., ISO 15189, CAP, CLIA) and local regulatory requirements.
  • Implement and monitor quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) programs, including regular proficiency testing and inter-laboratory comparisons.
  • Maintain meticulous documentation for all tests, validations, and quality activities. Participate in internal and external audits.

Leadership, Line Management & Training:

  • Lead and manage a team of molecular technologists, scientists, and trainees within the molecular pathology laboratory.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, delegate responsibilities, and foster a culture of excellence and continuous learning.
  • Provide training and mentorship to laboratory staff, pathology residents, and medical students in molecular techniques and result interpretation.

Research & Innovation:

  • Collaborate with clinicians, oncologists, infectious disease specialists, and researchers on translational and clinical research projects.
  • Contribute to the development of novel biomarkers and molecular signatures for disease diagnosis and monitoring.
  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences.

Collaboration, Consultation & Communication:

  • Consult with referring physicians and clinical teams to select appropriate molecular tests and interpret results in the context of patient care.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary tumor boards, infectious disease meetings, and genetic counseling sessions.
  • Communicate complex molecular findings clearly to clinicians, patients, and families with empathy and cultural sensitivity.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records in the laboratory information system (LIS) and hospital electronic medical record (EMR).

Requirements
Qualifications & Experience:

  • Medical Degree (MBBS/MD or equivalent) or PhD in Molecular Biology, Genetics, or a closely related field from a recognized institution.
  • Board Certification or Fellowship in Molecular Pathology (e.g., American Board of Pathology – Molecular Genetic Pathology, Fellow of the West African College of Physicians in Chemical Pathology, or equivalent international certification).
  • Valid medical license to practice in Nigeria (or eligibility to obtain one).
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in a molecular pathology or molecular diagnostics laboratory, with proven expertise in NGS, PCR, FISH, and Sanger sequencing.
  • Demonstrated experience in assay development, validation, quality assurance (ISO 15189/CAP/CLIA), and laboratory management.
  • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals is highly desirable. Experience in training laboratory staff and presenting at scientific conferences is an added advantage.
