Job Purpose
- The Radiography Technician performs diagnostic imaging procedures at AMCE, ensuring high-quality image production for accurate diagnosis and patient care. The role operates radiography equipment, maintains radiation safety, and supports radiologists and clinicians in delivering effective imaging services.
- The technician prepares patients, positions anatomical areas, and captures images while adhering to strict safety protocols and quality standards, working closely with radiologists, physicians, and nursing staff to ensure seamless workflows, patient comfort, and regulatory compliance.
Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities
Imaging Procedures & Patient Care:
- Perform general radiography procedures, including X-rays, fluoroscopy, and mobile/portable imaging, as requested by referring physicians.
- Position patients correctly and select appropriate technical factors to produce high-quality diagnostic images.
- Prepare and explain procedures to patients, ensuring comfort, cooperation, and informed consent before imaging.
- Adapt imaging techniques for paediatric, elderly, or immobile patients, as well as emergency or trauma cases.
Equipment Operation & Quality Assurance:
- Operate stationary and mobile radiography equipment according to manufacturer guidelines and departmental protocols.
- Perform daily pre-use checks of imaging equipment, ensuring functionality, cleanliness, and readiness.
- Report equipment faults immediately and follow up on repairs with biomedical engineering.
- Participate in quality assurance programmes, including image quality reviews and equipment calibration.
Radiation Safety & Compliance:
- Adhere strictly to radiation safety protocols, including ALARA principles, to minimise patient and staff exposure.
- Use appropriate shielding, collimation, and positioning techniques to optimise image quality while reducing radiation dose.
- Ensure compliance with all regulations set by the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) and other relevant bodies.
- Wear and maintain personnel dosimeters, reporting any unusual exposure readings promptly.
Image Processing & Documentation:
- Process, review, and archive images in the hospital's Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) or Radiology Information System (RIS).
- Ensure accurate labelling of images with patient demographics, examination details, and laterality.
- Maintain complete and accurate records of all imaging procedures, including dose indicators and patient positioning notes.
- Assist radiologists in the preparation of preliminary image assessments where required.
Collaboration & Communication:
- Collaborate closely with radiologists, referring physicians, and nursing staff to prioritise and coordinate imaging requests.
- Communicate effectively with patients and families, explaining procedures and addressing concerns with empathy and cultural sensitivity.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and contribute to the continuous improvement of radiology services.
- Liaise with the emergency department, operating theatre, and inpatient wards for urgent or mobile imaging needs.
Professional Development & Safety Culture:
- Stay current with advances in radiography techniques, equipment, and safety standards.
- Participate in continuing professional development (CPD) activities, workshops, and training sessions.
- Support institutional efforts to enhance image quality, patient safety, and operational efficiency.
- Contribute to the training and orientation of new radiography staff or students as required.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Radiography, Medical Imaging, or a related field from a recognized institution.
- Valid registration and practicing license with the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria (RRBN) or equivalent regulatory body.
- Strong knowledge of radiography principles, patient positioning, radiation safety protocols (ALARA), and infection control practices.
- Proficiency in operating digital radiography (DR), computed radiography (CR), and mobile X-ray equipment, with familiarity in PACS and RIS.
- At least 2-3 years of post-qualification experience as a Radiography Technician in a hospital or diagnostic imaging centre.
- Prior experience in trauma, paediatric, or mobile radiography is an advantage. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is desirable.
Must have skills:
- Proficiency in operating digital radiography (DR), computed radiography (CR), and mobile X-ray equipment, with familiarity in PACS and RIS.
