Developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in clinical partnership with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust., AMCE Abuja is the first of five centres planned for development in Africa.

Job Title: Junior Consultant - Emergency Medicine

Job Objective

  • The Junior Consultant, Emergency Medicine will be responsible for providing high-quality, evidence-based emergency care to patients of all ages presenting with a wide spectrum of undifferentiated and critical illnesses.
  • This role is pivotal in leading the resuscitation and acute care teams, supervising junior medical staff, ensuring smooth patient flow, and contributing to the operational and clinical excellence of the Emergency Department (ED) in AMCE.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities
Emergency Patient Management & Resuscitation:

  • Lead the initial assessment, stabilization, and management of critically ill or injured patients, including trauma, cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, and severe sepsis, adhering to advanced life support protocols.
  • Perform and interpret diagnostic procedures such as point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), electrocardiograms (ECGs), and arterial blood gases to guide immediate clinical decision-making.
  • Execute life-saving procedures independently, including airway management (intubation), central and arterial line insertion, chest tube thoracostomy, and fracture/ dislocation reduction.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans for a diverse range of emergency presentations, from minor injuries to complex, multi-system conditions.
  • Ensure safe and timely patient disposition, including discharge with appropriate follow-up, admission to inpatient services, or transfer to a higher level of care.

Team Leadership, Supervision & Teaching:

  • Provide direct clinical supervision and bedside teaching to Medical Officers and nursing staff during shifts, fostering a supportive and educational environment.
  • Lead the ED team during daily operations, coordinating patient flow, delegating tasks, and ensuring effective communication among all team members.
  • Conduct formal and informal teaching sessions, including case discussions, simulation-based training, and didactic lectures on core emergency medicine topics.
  • Supervise junior staff in the accurate and timely completion of medical records, procedure notes, and discharge summaries.
  • Mentor junior medical staff in their professional development, providing constructive feedback and supporting their clinical skill acquisition.

Operational Efficiency & Patient Flow

  • Collaborate with the Consultant and Nurse Manager to optimize patient flow, minimizing waiting times and ensuring efficient bed utilization within the ED and the wider hospital.
  • Implement and monitor triage protocols to ensure patients are seen based on clinical urgency, adhering to international standards.
  • Manage the "backlog" by coordinating with admitting teams, radiology, and laboratory services to expedite investigations and definitive care.
  • Proactively identify and resolve operational bottlenecks, communicating effectively with charge nurses and bed management to ensure smooth patient transitions to inpatient wards or other departments.
  • Participate in daily safety huddles and operational briefings to enhance team coordination and patient safety.

Quality Improvement & Clinical Governance:

  • Actively participate in the ED's quality improvement (QI) initiatives, including clinical audits, morbidity and mortality (M&M) reviews, and root cause analyses of adverse events.
  • Lead or contribute to at least one QI project annually aimed at improving key performance indicators such as door-to-doctor time, door-to-needle time for stroke, or pain management in the ED.
  • Ensure strict adherence to evidence-based clinical guidelines, hospital policies, and patient safety protocols (e.g., hand hygiene, medication safety, high-alert medication protocols).
  • Monitor and provide feedback to junior staff on compliance with documentation standards, referral protocols, and incident reporting.
  • Contribute to the development, review, and implementation of ED clinical protocols and pathways.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration & Referrals:

  • Facilitate effective communication and seamless patient transitions by liaising with inpatient teams (e.g., ICU, Cardiology, General Surgery, Pediatrics) for admissions and consultations.
  • Provide clear, concise, and timely handovers to accepting physicians and nursing staff to ensure continuity of care.
  • Coordinate with radiology, laboratory, and pharmacy services to prioritize diagnostic tests and treatments for critically ill patients.
  • Engage in effective collaboration with pre-hospital services (ambulance) to receive and optimize the care of incoming patients.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case conferences for complex or high-acuity patients.

Professional Development, Research & Ethical Practice:

  • Engage in continuous professional development (CPD) to remain current with the latest advancements and evidence-based practices in emergency medicine.
  • Participate in departmental research activities, contributing to data collection, analysis, or publication of findings in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Maintain current certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or equivalent.
  • Uphold the highest ethical standards, ensuring patient confidentiality, informed consent, and respect for patient autonomy and cultural diversity.
  • Serve as a role model for professionalism, integrity, and accountability, fostering a culture of safety and respect within the ED.

Requirements
Education, Skills and Competencies:

  • Medical Degree (MBBS/MD or equivalent) from a recognized institution. Completion of an accredited Emergency Medicine residency program.
  • Possession of board certification or equivalent in Emergency Medicine.
  • Excellent clinical skills in the assessment, stabilization, and management of a wide range of acute and critical conditions across all age groups, including trauma, cardiac emergencies, respiratory failure, and pediatric emergencies.
  • Proficiency in advanced emergency procedures, including airway management (intubation, surgical airway), central and arterial line insertion, chest tube thoracostomy, fracture reduction, and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS).
  • Must have 1 to 4 years post fellowship experience.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and empathy skills for delivering patient-centered care, communicating with distressed families, and collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems, emergency department information systems, and digital health technologies.
  • Ability to work independently as a shift leader and as part of a multidisciplinary team, managing complex patient flow and making time-critical decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to continuous learning, evidence-based medicine, quality improvement, clinical audit, and participation in morbidity and mortality reviews.
  • Leadership and teaching abilities for supervising, mentoring, and formally assessing junior medical staff, residents, and interns, including bedside teaching and simulation-based education.
  • Current and valid certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Basic Life Support (BLS).

Must have skills:

  • Proficiency in advanced emergency procedures, including airway management (intubation, surgical airway), central and arterial line insertion, chest tube thoracostomy, fracture reduction, and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS)
