Job Purpose

  • The Medical Laboratory Scientist – Immunophenotyping will provide specialist clinical flow cytometry services to support the diagnosis, monitoring, and management of patients with suspected leukemia, lymphoma, and related hematological conditions.
  • The role holder will perform, analyze, and interpret complex flow cytometry assays, providing expert interpretations to support diagnostic reports authorized by consultant hematologists and clinical scientists.

Responsibilities 
Flow Cytometry Analysis and Diagnosis:

  • Perform, analyze, and interpret complex flow cytometry assays for stem cell analysis, leukaemia, lymphoma, and related immunophenotyping applications.
  • Provide accurate and timely interpretations of findings to support diagnostic reports authorized by consultant/clinical scientists.
  • Ensure the highest standard of diagnostic accuracy and contribute to clinical decision-making.

Method Development and Validation:

  • Assist in the development, optimization, and validation of new flow cytometry procedures and panels to enhance diagnostic capabilities.
  • Participate in directed audits and developmental projects to drive continuous improvement.

Quality Assurance and Compliance:

  • Run, monitor, and evaluate Internal Quality Control (IQC) and External Quality Assurance (EQA) samples to ensure the laboratory meets ISO 15189:2022 standards.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and continuous improvement of the laboratory’s quality management system.
  • Ensure all local and national policies relating to diagnostic modalities are implemented and observed by staff.

Equipment Operation and Maintenance:

  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain flow cytometers and associated laboratory equipment, ensuring optimal performance and troubleshooting technical issues as they arise.
  • Maintain accurate equipment logs and reagent inventory.

Training and Competency Assessment:

  • Provide comprehensive training and competency assessment to junior staff, trainees, and medical laboratory technicians in advanced flow cytometry techniques.
  • Mentor team members to build technical expertise and uphold laboratory standards.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work closely with the Laboratory Manager, consultant hematologists, clinical scientists, and the wider clinical team to deliver the AMCE diagnostic portfolio.
  • Contribute to team meetings, case discussions, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Follow laboratory safety guidelines for handling biological specimens and chemicals.
  • Ensure compliance with all accreditations, regulatory, and health and safety standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a related field.
  • Specialist certification in flow cytometry or immunophenotyping is highly desirable.
  • In-depth understanding of hematological malignancies, immunology, and cell biology.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex cytometric data.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a clinical flow cytometry laboratory, preferably within a large or specialist hematology setting.
  • Proven expertise in performing and interpreting complex immunophenotyping for leukaemia, lymphoma, and stem cell analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience in method development, validation, and troubleshooting of flow cytometry assays.
  • Solid understanding of ISO 15189 quality standards, including participation in IQC and EQA schemes.
  • Experience in training and assessing the competency of junior laboratory staff.
  • Proficiency in using flow cytometry software and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).

Must have skills:

  • Hematological Malignancies Immunology Cell Biology.
