Africa Law Practice (ALP) was established, following a merger of Nigeria-based law practices, as a full-service law firm headquartered in Lagos, with an office in Abuja, Nigeria. About the job

  • We are seeking a diligent and detail-oriented Associate to join our legal team. At this level, you are expected to demonstrate sound technical capability and contribute meaningfully to complex client matters under the guidance and supervision of Senior Associates and Partners.
  • You will support the drafting, review, and execution of legal documents, conduct in-depth research, and assist with the delivery of high-quality client advisory and transactional work.
  • The role requires excellent analytical and organisational skills, strong attention to detail, and a commitment to collaboration, professionalism, and continuous learning.

Job Profile

  • Legal Research: Conducting comprehensive legal research and analysis on assigned matters, interpreting statutes, case law, and regulations to support client advisory and transactional work.
  • Legal Drafting: Assisting in the preparation, review, and revision of legal documents including contracts, agreements, opinions, and memoranda under the supervision of senior colleagues.
  • Legal Advisory Support: Contributing to the preparation of legal opinions, client notes, and advisory papers; identifying legal risks and supporting the development of practical recommendations.
  • Transaction Support: Providing assistance in due diligence exercises, corporate structuring, and transaction execution; ensuring all documentation complies with relevant legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Client Engagement Support: Attending client meetings alongside Senior Associates or Partners; preparing required documents, briefing notes, and follow-up materials as directed.
  • Matter Coordination: Organising and maintaining case files, tracking deliverables, and supporting Senior Associates and Partners in ensuring timely progress and completion of client engagements.
  • Knowledge Management: Contributing to internal knowledge initiatives through research summaries, legal updates, and participation in training or information-sharing sessions.
  • Business Development: Assisting in the preparation of proposals, pitch materials, and client presentations; supporting the firm’s business growth initiatives under supervision.
  • Firm Participation: Demonstrating commitment to the firm’s culture, values, and initiatives through participation in firm-wide activities and continuous professional development.
  • Miscellaneous: Performing other duties as may reasonably be assigned by Senior Associates or Partners.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law (LL.B) from a recognised institution.
  • Call to the Nigerian Bar (B.L) is mandatory.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ post-call experience in a reputable law firm or legal department.
  • Master’s degree (LL.M or other relevant postgraduate qualification) is an added advantage.
  • Strong understanding of corporate and commercial law, regulatory compliance, and transactional practice.
  • Excellent research, drafting, and analytical skills with a strong command of legal writing and documentation.
  • High attention to detail and the ability to produce accurate, well-structured work under supervision.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, professional environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative and professional approach.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiarity with legal research databases (e.g., LexisNexis, Law Pavilion) is required.
