Job Title: Special Needs Coordinator (SENDCo)

Location: Abuja (FCT) 
Employment Type: Full-time
Reports To: Vice Principal Academics
Leads & Manages: Support staff for SEN, Classroom Assistants, Teaching Assistants

Purpose

  • The SENDCo has whole-school responsibility for the development, coordination, and delivery of provision for students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
  • The role ensures the inclusion, progress, and well-being of all learners with additional needs, in line with the school’s ethos and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Learning:

  • Identify and adopt effective teaching approaches for SEN learners.
  • Monitor classroom activities to ensure all SEN students have equitable access to learning.
  • Support teachers in planning and delivering differentiated lessons.
  • Model best practice in inclusive teaching.

Assessment & Recording:

  • Establish systems for identifying, assessing, and reviewing SEN provision.
  • Create and monitor Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and provision maps.
  • Maintain and update the SEN register.
  • Track student progress and produce reports for teachers, parents, and leadership.
  • Assist the Exams Officer in arranging additional support, time, or specific papers for SEN students during assessments.

Leadership & Strategic Planning:

  • Provide training and CPD for staff on Inclusion and SEN best practices.
  • Advise school leadership on SEN policy development and strategic planning.
  • Liaise with external specialists and agencies to enhance support provision.
  • Lead initiatives to ensure compliance with statutory SEN requirements and safeguarding.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Communicate regularly with parents regarding SEN support and progress.
  • Guide teachers on supporting SEN students.
  • Collaborate with pastoral staff and leadership to ensure the well-being of students.

Compliance & Safeguarding:

  • Ensure all SEN practices comply with local legislation, national standards, and school policies.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information.
  • Act as Designated Child Protection Co-ordinator if required.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Special Education, Psychology, or related field.
  • SEN-specific certification or training is highly preferred.
  • 3–5 years’ experience in SEN teaching/coordinating role.
  • Experience preparing students for IGCSE, WAEC, or other national/international examinations.
  • Knowledge of Cambridge standards and inclusive teaching methodologies.

Salary
N200,000 / month.
