Farm Supervisor

Job Summary

  • The Farm Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of Aldelano's open-field habanero pepper and greenhouse bell pepper production units.
  • The role involves supervising farm attendants, ensuring adherence to production schedules, maintaining crop health, implementing agronomic practices, monitoring irrigation and fertigation activities, and ensuring that all farm operations are carried out efficiently, safely, and according to company standards.
  • The Farm Supervisor will work closely with the Farm Manager/Agronomist to achieve yield, quality, and productivity targets.

Key Responsibilities
Crop Production & Field Operations:

  • Supervise daily activities in open-field habanero and greenhouse bell pepper production.
  • Ensure proper land preparation, nursery management, transplanting, spacing, staking, pruning, trellising, and harvesting activities.
  • Monitor plant growth and ensure all crop management practices are implemented according to standard operating procedures.
  • Coordinate weeding, mulching, sanitation, and general field maintenance activities.
  • Ensure proper harvest scheduling to maximize yield and fruit quality. 

Irrigation & Fertigation Management:

  • Supervise drip irrigation operations and ensure proper watering schedules.
  • Monitor fertigation applications and ensure fertilizers are mixed and applied correctly.
  • Inspect irrigation systems regularly and report faults immediately.
  • Record water and fertilizer usage and report deviations from planned programs. 

Pest & Disease Management:

  • Conduct routine crop scouting for pests, diseases, nutrient deficiencies, and physiological disorders.
  • Report outbreaks promptly and ensure recommended control measures are implemented.
  • Supervise pesticide and fungicide applications while ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
  • Maintain accurate spray records and ensure proper use of PPE by workers. 

Greenhouse Management:

  • Supervise greenhouse workers involved in pruning, trellising, sucker removal, pollination support, harvesting, and sanitation.
  • Monitor greenhouse environmental conditions including temperature, humidity, ventilation, and crop hygiene.
  • Ensure greenhouse structures, irrigation systems, and equipment are maintained properly. 

Staff Supervision:

  • Assign daily tasks to farm attendants and greenhouse workers.
  • Monitor employee attendance, punctuality, productivity, and quality of work.
  • Train workers on best practices in pepper production, harvesting, safety, and hygiene.
  • Enforce company policies, discipline, and health and safety procedures.
  • Conduct daily toolbox meetings and performance briefings. 

Harvest & Post-Harvest Management:

  • Supervise harvesting activities to ensure fruits are harvested at the correct maturity stage.
  • Ensure proper sorting, grading, packing, and handling procedures.
  • Minimize post-harvest losses through proper handling and storage practices.
  • Maintain records of harvested quantities and quality grades. 

Record Keeping & Reporting:

  • Maintain daily records of labor, irrigation, fertilizer application, pesticide usage, and harvest volumes.
  • Submit daily, weekly, and monthly reports to the Farm Manager.
  • Report operational challenges and recommend corrective actions.
  • Assist in monitoring farm inventory and input utilization. 

Health, Safety & Compliance:

  • Ensure all workers comply with farm safety protocols.
  • Enforce the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain clean and hygienic working environments in both field and greenhouse operations.
  • Ensure compliance with food safety and quality standards. 

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Crop survival rate after transplanting.
  • Yield per hectare (habanero) and per greenhouse block (bell pepper).
  • Labor productivity and efficiency.
  • Reduction in pest and disease losses.
  • Irrigation and fertilizer application accuracy.
  • Harvest quality and post-harvest loss percentage.
  • Timeliness and accuracy of farm records and reports.
  • Compliance with safety and operational procedures.

Qualifications & Experience

  • OND, HND, B.Sc Degree or equivalent qualification in Agriculture, Agronomy, Horticulture, Crop Production, or related fields
  • 2–5 years practical experience supervising commercial vegetable production.
  • Hands-on experience with open-field habanero pepper production is highly preferred.
  • Experience with greenhouse bell pepper production is an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of drip irrigation systems, fertigation, pest management, and crop nutrition.
  • Ability to lead and manage farm workers effectively. 

Required Skills:

  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Good communication and reporting abilities.
  • Ability to identify crop problems and recommend solutions.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Excel, Word, and record keeping).
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet production targets.
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills. 

Working Conditions:

  • Combination of open-field and greenhouse work environments.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions.
  • Availability to work weekends and extended hours during peak production and harvest periods.
  • Regular walking, standing, lifting, and field inspections.

Primary Goal:

  • To ensure efficient supervision of open-field habanero and greenhouse bell pepper operations, resulting in high yields, superior fruit quality, minimal losses, and effective management of labor and farm resources. 

Salary
N150,000 - N200,000 monthly.
