Job Title: Accountant

Role Summary
- We are seeking an Accountant who will be responsible for managing the company’s day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining internal controls, monitoring station revenues, reconciling transactions, and supporting management with timely financial insights for decision-making.
- The ideal candidate must be analytical, highly accurate, commercially aware, and experienced in handling accounting functions within a retail, oil & gas, or fast-paced operational environment.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Accounting:
- Maintain accurate accounting records for all business transactions.
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly financial reports across stations and business operations.
- Prepare monthly management accounts, profit and loss reports, and balance sheet schedules.
- Post journal entries and maintain the general ledger.
- Assist with month-end and year-end closing activities.
Cash Management & Reconciliation:
- Monitor daily station sales, deposits, transfers, and remittances.
- Reconcile cash, POS transactions, bank lodgements, and fuel sales records.
- Perform daily and monthly bank reconciliations.
- Investigate and resolve discrepancies in cash balances, station returns, or accounting records.
- Ensure proper documentation of all receipts and payments.
Accounts Payable & Receivable:
- Process vendor payments and maintain supplier ledgers.
- Reconcile supplier statements and follow up on discrepancies.
- Track receivables, outstanding balances, and customer accounts where applicable.
- Maintain payment schedules and ensure timely settlement of obligations.
Inventory & Operational Controls:
- Reconcile fuel stock against sales and tank readings.
- Monitor inventory movement for PMS, AGO, DPK, lubricants, and non-fuel products.
- Support periodic stock counts and physical verification exercises.
- Review variances in stock, fuel discharge, or sales reports and escalate findings.
- Strengthen controls to minimize leakages, fraud, and operational losses.
Payroll, Tax & Compliance:
- Support payroll preparation and related staff financial documentation.
- Ensure timely remittance of statutory deductions including PAYE, pension, VAT, and withholding tax where applicable.
- Maintain proper accounting documentation for audits and regulatory compliance.
- Support internal and external audit exercises.
Analysis & Decision Support:
- Prepare financial analysis on station profitability, margins, costs, and performance trends.
- Track expenses and budget performance across stations.
- Provide management with financial insights to support business planning and operational decisions.
- Recommend cost-saving opportunities and process improvements.
Requirements
Education:
- Minimum of HND or Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related discipline.
Experience:
- Minimum of 10– 15 years’ relevant accounting experience, preferably in:
- Oil & Gas / Downstream Retail
- Filling station operations
- Retail accounting
- FMCG or multi-location operations
Required Skills & Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting
- Experience with bank reconciliation and cash management
- Strong understanding of inventory accounting and stock reconciliation
- High proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Familiarity with accounting software/ERP systems
- Excellent analytical and numerical ability
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- High level of integrity and confidentiality
- Good reporting and documentation skills
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
