Job Title: Medical Laboratory Scientist

Location: Benin City, Edo

Job Summary

  • The medical laboratory scientist is responsible for performing laboratory tests and analyses that support the diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and prevention of diseases.
  • The role involves operating laboratory equipment, processing patient specimens, ensuring quality control, maintaining laboratory records, and adhering to professional and regulatory standards.
  • The medical laboratory scientist plays a vital role in providing accurate and timely laboratory results to support patient care and clinical decision-making.

Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Testing and Analysis:

  • Perform laboratory investigations in areas including hematology, chemical pathology, microbiology, immunology, histopathology, molecular diagnostics, and blood transfusion science.
  • Collect, process, analyze, and interpret laboratory specimens according to established procedures.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of laboratory test results.
  • Verify and validate laboratory findings before release.
  • Participate in specialized and advanced diagnostic testing where required.

Sample Collection and Processing:

  • Receive, label, and process patient specimens accurately.
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, transportation, and disposal of specimens.
  • Maintain specimen integrity throughout the testing process.
  • Identify and resolve issues related to specimen quality and suitability.

Quality Assurance and Quality Control:

  • Conduct daily quality control procedures and document results.
  • Participate in internal and external quality assurance programs.
  • Monitor laboratory processes to ensure compliance with quality standards.
  • Investigate and document non-conformities and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain accreditation and certification requirements where applicable.

Equipment Operation and Maintenance:

  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Perform routine equipment checks and troubleshooting.
  • Report equipment malfunctions and coordinate repairs when necessary.
  • Ensure laboratory instruments are functioning optimally and safely.

Laboratory Safety and Compliance:

  • Adhere to laboratory safety policies and infection prevention protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, professional, and accreditation standards.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of patient information.
  • Properly manage hazardous materials and biomedical waste.
  • Participate in safety audits and risk management activities.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and test documentation.
  • Enter laboratory results into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) or Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system.
  • Prepare laboratory reports and statistical summaries.
  • Ensure complete and accurate documentation for audits and inspections.

Qualifications and Requirements
Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.

Professional Requirements:

  • Current practicing license from the relevant Medical Laboratory Science regulatory authority.
  • Registration with the appropriate medical laboratory science council or board.
  • Evidence of annual practicing license renewal where applicable.

Experience:

  • 1–3 years of post-qualification laboratory experience preferred.
  • Experience in a hospital, diagnostic center, research institution, or clinical laboratory environment.
  • Freshly licensed professionals may be considered for entry-level opportunities.
