Job Title: Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist (OBGYN)

Position Summary
- The successful candidate will provide specialist obstetric and gynaecological services, oversee the safe management of labour and delivery, support the development of maternity and neonatal services, and contribute to the hospital's clinical governance and quality improvement programmes.
- The role requires a clinician with proven experience in managing both routine and high-risk pregnancies, obstetric emergencies, Caesarean Sections, and complex gynaecological conditions. The successful candidate must demonstrate excellent clinical judgement, strong communication skills, professional integrity, accountability, and the ability to work effectively within an established management and governance framework.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive obstetric and gynaecological care to patients.
- Conduct antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal, infertility, family planning, and gynaecology clinics.
- Lead the management of normal and high-risk pregnancies.
- Supervise labour ward activities and delivery services.
- Manage obstetric emergencies promptly and effectively.
- Perform Caesarean Sections and other obstetric and gynaecological procedures as required.
- Provide specialist support for neonatal resuscitation and immediate newborn care in collaboration with paediatric and nursing teams.
- Ensure appropriate fetal and maternal monitoring throughout labour.
- Identify high-risk pregnancies early and implement appropriate management plans.
- Make sound clinical decisions regarding vaginal delivery, operative delivery, Caesarean Section, or referral.
- Recognise situations where patient needs exceed the facility's capacity and initiate timely referral where appropriate.
- Participate in emergency and on-call services.
Maternal & Neonatal Care Development:
- Support the growth and continuous improvement of BCHOC's maternity and neonatal services.
- Assist in the development of maternal mortality reduction initiatives.
- Assist in the development of neonatal mortality reduction initiatives.
- Contribute to the establishment and strengthening of antenatal, postnatal, fertility, high-risk pregnancy, and neonatal follow-up clinics.
- Participate in community education programmes focused on maternal and child health.
Clinical Governance & Risk Management:
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, protocols, and clinical guidelines.
- Conduct and document comprehensive antenatal risk assessments.
- Participate actively in maternal and perinatal mortality reviews.
- Participate in root cause analyses, clinical audits, and serious incident investigations.
- Ensure accurate, complete, objective, and timely clinical documentation.
- Maintain high standards of medico-legal record keeping.
- Promote patient safety and evidence-based practice.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of SOPs, risk assessment tools, and clinical pathways.
- Participate in quality assurance and continuous improvement initiatives.
Leadership & Team Management:
- Provide leadership to doctors, midwives, nurses, CHEWs, and other healthcare professionals.
- Promote a culture of teamwork, accountability, professionalism, and continuous learning.
- Support and mentor junior doctors and maternity staff.
- Ensure timely escalation of high-risk cases.
- Foster effective multidisciplinary collaboration in patient care.
- Participate constructively in management, governance, and quality improvement meetings.
Responsibilities will include:
- Providing specialist clinical leadership and support to existing and future BCHOC facilities as required.
- Assisting in the development and implementation of standardised clinical protocols, care pathways, and operating procedures across all BCHOC locations.
- Supporting the establishment and expansion of maternity, fertility, women's health, and neonatal services within the organisation.
- Participating in the training, mentoring, and professional development of doctors, nurses, midwives, and other healthcare professionals across BCHOC facilities.
- Supporting quality improvement, patient safety, and service development initiatives throughout the organisation.
- Contributing to clinical governance activities, maternal and perinatal outcome reviews, and continuous service improvement programmes.
- Providing specialist input into strategic planning for maternal, neonatal, and women's health services.
- Participating in outreach programmes, specialist clinics, telemedicine services, and other initiatives designed to improve access to quality healthcare.
- Working collaboratively with management and clinical teams to support BCHOC's vision of becoming a leading provider of maternal, neonatal, and women's healthcare services in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Essential Qualifications
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN), West African College of Surgeons (WACS), or equivalent recognised specialist qualification in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
- Current practising licence with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
- Minimum of five (5) years post-specialisation experience.
- Consultant status preferred.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience:
- Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist.
- Experience in hospital leadership or clinical governance roles.
- Experience establishing or managing maternity and neonatal programmes.
- Experience in fertility and reproductive health services.
- Experience in quality improvement and healthcare accreditation initiatives.
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Extensive experience in labour ward management.
- Proven experience managing high-risk pregnancies and obstetric emergencies.
- Strong competence in Caesarean Section and operative obstetrics.
- Experience managing fetal distress, obstructed labour, shoulder dystocia, postpartum haemorrhage, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, and neonatal emergencies.
- Strong antenatal risk assessment and clinical decision-making skills.
- Ability to critically evaluate diagnostic investigations and correlate findings with clinical assessment.
- Experience working safely and effectively in resource-conscious healthcare settings.
- Demonstrated commitment to reducing maternal and neonatal mortality.
