Job Title: Structural Design Engineer
Location: Port Harcourt, Rivers
Job Summary
- The primary purpose of this role is to conceptualize, analyze, design, and deliver safe, durable, economical, and code-compliant structural solutions for buildings, bridges, drainage systems, and civil infrastructure.
- The engineer ensures structures can safely withstand applied loads, environmental factors, and operational demands throughout their design life.
Core Responsibilities
Structural Analysis and Design:
- Perform detailed structural analysis and design for reinforced concrete, structural steel, masonry, timber, and composite structures.
- Design shallow and deep foundations (e.g., footings, rafts, piles, retaining walls).
- Design structural steel systems (beams, columns, trusses, connections, pipe racks, industrial platforms).
- Design reinforced concrete structures (slabs, beams, columns, shear walls, water-retaining structures, culverts).
- Assess structural integrity and design rehabilitation, strengthening, or retrofitting for existing structures.
Drawing Production and Documentation:
- Prepare, review, and maintain structural general arrangement drawings, reinforcement detailing, fabrication drawings, construction drawings, and bar bending schedules.
- Prepare and review structural calculations, design reports, technical specifications, and design basis documents.
Coordination and BIM Integration:
- Coordinate structural designs with multidisciplinary teams (Architectural, MEP, Process, and Civil Engineering) to ensure compatibility and constructability.
- Develop, review, and coordinate Building Information Modelling (BIM) structural models to resolve clashes.
- Participate in interdisciplinary design reviews, technical workshops, HAZID, HAZOP, and value engineering exercises.
Site Engineering and Construction Support
- Provide site engineering support, conduct inspections, and resolve technical structural issues.
- Review contractor Requests for Information (RFIs), technical queries (TQs), method statements, and material submittals.
- Evaluate non-conformance reports (NCRs) and recommend corrective actions
Compliance, Quality, and Leadership:
- Ensure all designs comply with international codes (British Standards, Eurocodes, ACI, AISC, ASCE, ASTM).
- Enforce company HSE policies, Life-Saving Rules (LSR), and quality management systems.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to graduate engineers, junior designers, and CAD/BIM technicians.
- Support tendering / bidding processes, engineering estimates, and feasibility studies.
Job Requirements & Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree (B.Sc. - Upper Division & above) or Higher National Diploma (HND - Upper Credit & above) in Civil/Structural Engineering or equivalent.
Experience:
- At least 3–5 years of experience in structural design and consultancy specifically for buildings (low-rise and high-rise) and Oil & Gas projects (pipelines, well pads, process plants, utilities).
- A minimum of 8 years of experience in structural steel and reinforced concrete designs.
Professional Certifications:

COREN certification is required; additional certifications (ASCE, ISE, NSE, NICE, etc.) are considered an advantage.
Software Proficiency:
- Strong proficiency in industry-standard engineering and BIM software, including AutoCAD, STAAD.Pro, Autodesk Robot Structural Analysis, ProtaStructure, ETABS, SAP2000, Tekla Structural Designer, SAFE, and Autodesk Revit Structure.
