Job Summary
- The Senior Accountant is responsible for overseeing the organization's accounting operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining compliance with applicable financial regulations, and supporting strategic financial planning.
- The role involves supervising accounting staff, managing financial records, preparing budgets and reports, monitoring internal controls, and ensuring that all financial transactions are recorded accurately and in a timely manner.
- The ideal candidate should possess strong analytical skills, attention to detail, leadership capabilities, and extensive knowledge of accounting principles, tax regulations, and financial management.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management:
- Prepare and maintain accurate financial statements, reports, and supporting schedules.
- Ensure all accounting records comply with applicable accounting standards and company policies.
- Manage the organization's general ledger and ensure all transactions are properly recorded.
- Review journal entries and account reconciliations before posting.
- Oversee month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes.
- Maintain fixed asset registers and depreciation schedules.
- Monitor cash flow and prepare cash flow forecasts.
Financial Reporting:
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual management accounts.
- Generate financial reports for executive management and stakeholders.
- Analyze financial performance and recommend corrective actions where necessary.
- Present financial information and explain variances from budgets and forecasts.
- Develop financial dashboards and performance indicators.
Budgeting and Forecasting:
- Coordinate annual budgeting exercises across departments.
- Prepare financial forecasts and projections.
- Monitor budget implementation and identify significant variances.
- Support management with cost analysis and financial planning.
- Recommend strategies for cost optimization and revenue enhancement.
Tax and Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure timely filing and payment of all statutory obligations, including taxes, pensions, and other regulatory requirements.
- Prepare tax schedules and liaise with tax authorities when necessary.
- Stay updated on changes in tax laws and financial regulations.
- Ensure compliance with local financial reporting standards and government regulations.
Internal Controls and Risk Management:
- Develop and implement effective internal control systems.
- Monitor compliance with financial policies and procedures.
- Identify financial risks and recommend mitigation strategies.
- Conduct periodic reviews of accounting processes to improve efficiency.
- Ensure proper authorization and documentation of financial transactions.
Accounts Payable and Receivable Oversight:
- Supervise payment processing and vendor reconciliations.
- Monitor customer receivables and ensure timely collections.
- Review aging reports and recommend actions on outstanding balances.
- Ensure supplier invoices are processed accurately and promptly.
Payroll Oversight:
- Review payroll computations for accuracy before processing.
- Ensure statutory deductions are correctly calculated and remitted.
- Reconcile payroll accounts and resolve discrepancies.
- Collaborate with HR on payroll-related matters.
Audit Coordination:
- Coordinate internal and external audits.
- Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation.
- Respond to audit queries and implement recommendations.
- Ensure audit findings are addressed promptly.
Team Leadership:
- Supervise and mentor junior accountants and finance staff.
- Assign responsibilities and monitor team performance.
- Conduct performance evaluations and recommend development initiatives.
- Promote continuous improvement within the finance team.
Banking and Treasury Management:
- Reconcile bank accounts regularly.
- Manage relationships with banks and financial institutions.
- Monitor organizational liquidity and investment activities.
- Review payment approvals and treasury operations.
Financial Analysis:
- Analyze revenue, expenses, profitability, and operational costs.
- Prepare variance analyses and management reports.
- Identify financial trends and recommend strategic improvements.
- Support investment appraisals and business expansion initiatives.
Policy Development:
- Develop and review accounting policies and procedures.
- Ensure adherence to company financial controls.
- Recommend process improvements for operational efficiency.
- Maintain proper documentation for accounting procedures.
Other Duties:
- Participate in strategic planning meetings.
- Support mergers, acquisitions, or due diligence activities where applicable.
- Provide financial guidance to department heads.
- Perform any other duties assigned by management.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
- At least 2–3 years in a supervisory or senior accounting role.
- Experience in financial reporting, taxation, budgeting, and audit coordination.
- Industry experience in manufacturing, healthcare, FMCG, or corporate finance is an added advantage.
