Job Title: Medical Laboratory Scientist

Job Summary

  • We are seeking a qualified and detail-oriented Medical Laboratory Scientist to join our healthcare team.
  • The successful candidate will be responsible for performing laboratory tests, analyzing specimens, maintaining laboratory equipment, and ensuring accurate and timely reporting of test results to support patient diagnosis, treatment, and disease prevention.
  • The ideal candidate should possess strong technical skills, a commitment to quality standards, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced hospital environment.

Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Testing & Analysis:

  • Perform routine and specialized laboratory tests in areas such as Hematology, Chemical Pathology, Microbiology, Histopathology, Immunology, Molecular Diagnostics, and Blood Transfusion Science.
  • Collect, receive, process, and analyze patient specimens in accordance with established laboratory procedures.
  • Interpret test results and ensure accuracy before reporting findings to physicians and other healthcare professionals.
  • Ensure timely delivery of test results to support effective patient care and clinical decision-making.
  • Conduct quality control procedures to verify the reliability and accuracy of laboratory results.

Laboratory Operations & Equipment Management:

  • Operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Monitor inventory levels and ensure the availability of laboratory reagents, consumables, and supplies.
  • Maintain proper documentation of laboratory procedures, test results, and equipment maintenance records.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory safety standards, infection prevention protocols, and waste disposal procedures.

Quality Assurance & Compliance:

  • Adhere to established quality assurance and quality control standards.
  • Participate in internal and external quality assessment programs.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, laboratory regulations, and professional standards.
  • Assist during laboratory audits, inspections, and accreditation processes.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information and laboratory records.

Collaboration & Patient Care Support:

  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide accurate diagnostic information.
  • Provide guidance on specimen collection requirements and test procedures.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, training sessions, and continuous professional development activities.
  • Assist in training laboratory interns, students, and junior laboratory personnel where applicable.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Accuracy and reliability of laboratory test results.
  • Turnaround time for specimen processing and reporting.
  • Compliance with quality assurance and safety standards.
  • Equipment uptime and proper maintenance records.
  • Successful participation in audits and accreditation processes.
  • Effective inventory management and minimal stock-outs.

Requirements
Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science (B.MLS) from a recognized institution.
  • Valid practicing license from the appropriate regulatory body.
  • Registration with the relevant Medical Laboratory Science Council or professional association.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2–5 years' experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist in a hospital, diagnostic laboratory, or healthcare setting.
  • Experience in operating laboratory equipment and performing diagnostic tests across multiple laboratory disciplines.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) is an added advantage.

Working Conditions:

  • Hospital-based environment with exposure to biological specimens and laboratory chemicals.
  • May require shift work, weekend duties, public holiday coverage, and emergency call-outs.
  • Must adhere to all laboratory safety and infection prevention protocols.
