Job Title: Fiber Field Engineer

Location: Ikeja, Lagos

Reports To: Field Operations Manager / Lead Network Engineer

Position Summary

  • The Telecom Fiber Field Service Engineer is responsible for the hands-on installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and emergency restoration of fiber optic network infrastructure. .

Key Responsibilities

  • Installation & Deployment: Pull, prep, and route fiber optic cables in various environments including aerial poles, underground conduits, and micro-duct systems.
  • TekCom Resources, Inc.
  • Splicing & Termination: Perform high-quality fusion splicing, mechanical splicing, and terminations on multi-strand fiber optic cables. Organize and seal splice enclosures (dome enclosures, patch panels).
  • Testing & Commissioning: Conduct end-to-end testing of fiber spans using specialized diagnostic gear. Document and review test traces to ensure loss budgets meet architectural standards.
  • Troubleshooting & Fault Isolation: Respond to network degradation reports or critical outages. Pinpoint exact break or macro-bend locations and execute rapid emergency restorations.

  • Site Surveys & As-Builts: Conduct pre-construction site surveys to assess path routing and spatial availability. Update network engineering prints, map markups, and "as-built" documentation post-installation.
  • Safety & Compliance: Adhere strictly to local safety regulations, OSHA guidelines, and traffic control protocols when working on public roads or at heights.

Required Technical Skills & Core Competencies:

  • Competency Area Specific Skills & Tools Required
  • Fiber Handling: Fusion splicing (ribbon and single-strand), fiber preparation, mid-span access, and color-code identification (TIA/EIA-598). Diagnostic Equipment: Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR), Optical Power Meters (OPM), Visual Fault Locators (VFL), and fiber inspection scopes.
  • Network Architecture: Solid understanding of FTTx (Fiber-to-the-Home/Premises), GPON, Active Ethernet, and DWDM technologies.
